Mexican pleads guilty to U.S. agent's murder tied to gun probe

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A Mexican man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to first-degree murder in the 2010 death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent, a killing linked to a controversial U.S. attempt to track gunrunning to Mexico drug cartels.

Manuel Osorio-Arellanes made a deal with prosecutors and entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Tucson in the shooting death of agent Brian Terry in the Arizona borderlands, federal officials said. He could face life in prison, but prosecutors will not seek the death penalty.

Osorio-Arellanes, 36, was one of five Mexican suspects charged in Terry's murder. His death was linked to a U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigation that allowed weapons to slip across the border into Mexico.

Two guns found at the remote area north of Nogales where Terry was killed in a shoot-out were traced to the sting operation, dubbed "Fast and Furious."

It remained unclear if the weapons were used in the murder and it is not known which of the five suspects killed the Border Patrol agent in the nighttime gunfight.

Laura Duffy, U.S. attorney for the southern district of California, said the deal represented "an important step in seeking justice on behalf of Agent Terry."

"Agent Terry was killed in the line of duty courageously safeguarding our border," Duffy, who is handling the case, said in a statement. "Our country owes him and his family a great debt of gratitude for his ultimate sacrifice in service to our country."

Osorio-Arellanes is scheduled to be sentenced on January 11. His attorney declined to comment on the plea agreement.

Arizona is a busy corridor for Mexican smugglers hauling marijuana and other drugs north to consumers in the United States.

According to the plea, Osorio-Arellanes admitted to entering Arizona in December 2010 with the others to rob traffickers of their drugs. Then on the evening of December 14, members of the group exchanged fire with agents in the area.

Osorio-Arellanes was wounded in the firefight and was arrested on the night of the shooting, federal prosecutors said.

Authorities offered a reward of up to $1 million in July for information leading to the arrest of the four other men believed to be involved in Terry's killing. Mexican police detained one of those men, Lionel Portillo-Meza, in September. He is awaiting extradition to the United States, prosecutors said.

The border killing sparked an election year firestorm between the administration of President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans, who slammed the government for allowing the program and called on Attorney General Eric Holder to resign.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives found Holder, the nation's top law enforcement official, in contempt for withholding documents related to the gun-running probe.

Terry's family has filed a $25 million wrongful-death claim against the U.S. government, saying he was killed because federal investigators allowed guns to fall into the hands of violent criminals.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the family said it was "extremely pleased" with the development, but noted that "three other ... fugitives are believed to be on the loose in Mexico and have thus far avoided capture" despite the bounty on their heads.

Marina Krim's nurse Yoselyn Ortega to be arraigned from hospital ...

?

Yoselyn Ortega and Marina and Kevin Krim's children murdered

Yoselyn Ortega and Marina and Kevin Krim's children murdered

Marina Krim?s nanny Yoselyn Ortega now hires lawyer. Still not talking to cops.

Marina Krim?s nanny Yoselyn Ortega thought to have resented her employers?

Marina Krim?s nanny Yoselyn Ortega refuses to cooperate with authorities.

Did Marina Krim?s nanny Yoselyn Ortega have a motive?

Why did a Manhattan nanny stab Marina Krim?s two children to death?

It is being reported that the Manhattan nanny purported to have murdered Marina and Kevin Krim?s two children, 6 year old Lulu and 2 year old Leo Krim will be arraigned tomorrow as authorities are now set to lay charges against Yoselyn Ortega.

Still incubated after her failed attempt at suicide Ms Ortega was able to sustain consciousness late this weekend when she asked about her immediate family and sought the appointing of a lawyer. Interestingly it was said that she declined to ask about the Krim family and has asked to have her immediate family present with her.

To date Ms Ortega has only been able to communicate by nodding her head and using her eyes as questions been asked of her. Nevertheless when she was asked about her involvement with respect to the death of the Krim family children she declined to respond leading many to speculate whether the murders were as a consequence of resentment towards the Krim family who are said to have enjoyed a privilege life whilst she in turn struggled merely to keep afloat (despite reports of being paid a generous salary) raising questions as to how one class of people in NYC live relative to privileged classes. Hardly the preferred discussion amongst the tea set?

That said some media outletsare reporting that Ms Ortega was planning on seeking psychological counseling (which some wonder if it was a realistic option given Ms Ortega?s financial woes) as her financial and personal woes began to spiral out of control. Of course this also raises the uncomfortable question whether the Krim family were aware of Ms Ortega?s situation and if so what obligations or responsibilities did they have as her employer to help rectify those issues, if any?

It is known that Ms Ortega began working for the Krims two years ago, and they quickly became ?like one family.? Nevertheless this further raises more uncomfortable questions, if there was such a healthy family feeling why did the woman take out her grief on the Krim family children? Was it actual resentment and a feeling of slight, class resentment, something that was said to her or is this simply an instance of one woman who was unable to bear the strains of living and inexplicably lashed out at her employer?s children?

It is also understood Ms Ortega did not live with the Krim family and had no criminal past.

Social Media Has Turned Digital Marketing On Its Head | Business ...

Having a good marketing and advertising strategy in place means that businesses get the right exposure of services or products there are offering consumers. In the past this proved to be a very expensive operation which involved a lot of planning. Digital marketing came along and offered businesses an affordable option that is proving to be very effective and the mass market is now aware of the benefits they can gain from it.

With the advent of agencies and consultants who now specialise in this field of work, online companies soon realised that these agencies offered them a way of getting their products or services noticed by consumers. They were able to instil the desire to purchase their products which meant they became valued customers.

Digital marketing works very effectively for online businesses but the effect on the mass market is having a somewhat peculiar effect and the reason for this is that it is governed by DRM (Digital Rights Management). This exists in the form of copy protections, online verifications and encryptions which protect and check revenues that are generated by items being sold.

There are two sides to the story though, and many think the DRM measures that are in place results in the consumer suffering the consequences of all the registration and verification processes that people legally own items in the first place have to go through, this being the software or digital media in question.

The measures that are in place are supposed to protect copyright and are there to target pirates who do break copyright laws. These people it would appear are not really affected by the measures whatsoever, which makes the whole system fall apart and become rather meaningless.

Digital marketing on the Internet is big business but this form of marketing is used through television, radio and other media platforms. The advent of social media becoming such a strong marketing platform has meant that consumers gained an enormous amount of power over how they are sold items they are interested in. This has led to a complete rethink on how marketing is conceived by marketers, who lost control to a certain extent, on how they presented products and services to potential customers.

Search engines play a vital role in digital marketing so planning a strategy yourself means you need to be aware of what digital marketing really involves and what techniques you can use to your advantage. Banner ads, web blogs and having an advert and your website listed in a search engine are favourite methods of digital advertising. The fact that interactive actions are now very much in evidence results in consumers having more control over how they act when they are visiting websites.

Many companies and businesses have realised the benefits of taking the process of digital marketing into their own hands and many have achieved great results by doing so. But a complete understanding of how SEO actually works is critical to the success you achieve. It is also vital to understand and set in place a system which allows consumers and therefore the mass market who visit your website to believe that they are in charge of the situation.

Social media digital marketing platforms have bought the whole concept of advertising into the twenty first century in a rather positive way. This giant leap has meant that mass media digital marketing has had to be totally rethought and re-evaluated with the effects it has on the mass market very much in mind.

Can 'Cloud Atlas' survive Hollywood reincarnation? - KansasCity.com

Susan Sarandon reported for work on ?Cloud Atlas? midway through the shoot, in time to see a collection of far-flung film scenes that the cast and crew were viewing.

There were bits of a 19th-century sea voyage, a 1930s period drama, a 1970s thriller, a contemporary comic adventure, a 22nd-century tale of rebellion and a 24th-century post-apocalyptic saga. ?I just thought, my God, this looks like the trailer for every film a studio is doing for the entire season,? Sarandon recalled. Yet it was just one film: ?Cloud Atlas,? an epic of shifting genres and intersecting souls that features Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Jim Sturgess, James D?Arcy, Doona Bae, Keith David, Sarandon and others in multiple roles spanning centuries. That diverse cast is a great selling point for distributor Warner Bros., which opens ?Cloud Atlas? in the U.S. on Friday. So, too, is the filmmaking team: American siblings Lana and Andy Wachowski, creators of ?The Matrix? films, who wrote the screenplay and directed ?Cloud Atlas? with German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (?Run Lola Run?). The fact that the film is adapted from a best-selling novel also should help its audience appeal. Yet considering that ?Cloud Atlas? author David Mitchell himself once felt the novel was unfilmable, fans of the book may have serious doubts about handing over their cash and spending nearly three hours in a theater to digest Hollywood?s version. It?s such a tough sell that even the notoriously media-shy Wachowskis, who had a no-press clause on earlier films, are out there eagerly hawking ?Cloud Atlas.? ?It?s dear to us, and that?s definitely part of it. Our partnership with Tom, our marriage with Tom, that?s definitely a part of it. Tom engages with the press and has shown us, taught us some tricks that have made it a little easier for us to get back involved,? said Andy Wachowski in an interview alongside his sister and their longtime pal Tykwer. With mixed but generally appreciative early reviews ? some critics reveling in its audacity and even detractors admiring its ambition ? ?Cloud Atlas? already is an artistic success simply by existing, given its unlikely path to the screen. The Wachowskis discovered the book from Natalie Portman, who was reading ?Cloud Atlas? on the set of their 2006 thriller ?V for Vendetta.? The siblings recommended the novel to Tykwer, and the three spent years overcoming creative and commercial obstacles to adapt it for film. The $100 million budget was pieced together from a variety of international financiers and distributors; Warner Bros. acquired U.S. rights but declined to finance the film, despite the studio?s success with the Wachowskis? ?Matrix? trilogy. Then there were the challenges of condensing dozens of key characters in six stories that span the globe and sprawl across 500 years as souls are reincarnated and progress through the ages. ?The book seemed almost like a revolutionary act in and of itself,? Lana Wachowski said. ?David has said since that they did have trouble with, do you put it in science fiction, do you put it in drama? Where do you put it on the shelf in the bookstore?? The way they cracked the code was, in a word author Mitchell tosses about repeatedly, ingenious. The same actors would play characters in different periods, sometimes switching race and gender, as each soul moves upward, downward or sideways on the karmic plane. ?The book is unfilmable, but they haven?t quite adapted the book,? Mitchell said. ?They sort of disassembled the book and reassembled it in the form of a filmable film by having actors recurring, and implying therefore it?s the same soul on this sort of ethical journey ? or, no pun intended, a matrix of ethical journeys.? So Hanks is a rapacious doctor in 1849, a murderous thug with artistic pretensions in 2012, a cowardly goatherd inching toward enlightenment in the 24th century. Berry is a white Jewish adulteress in the 1930s, a gutsy journalist in the 1970s, an Asian medical man in the 22nd century and part of an elite race of survivors in the 24th. The film?s prologue is an assault of images and characters introducing six different time periods and stories, with ?Cloud Atlas? then settling into a kaleidoscope that shifts from era to era, deconstructing the chronological structure of the half-dozen narratives in Mitchell?s novel. ?There are going to be people out there who are going to say, ?Who do they think they are to make this movie like this?? That?s been the case with every great film. They said the same thing about ?The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari? in the silent days,? Hanks said. ?I think every audience is yearning to be surprised. I am bored when I walk into the theater expecting A, B and C, and a movie delivers A, B and C. I want to see something brand new that I never anticipated coming a hundred million miles away. And my God, that happens before the words ?Cloud Atlas? appear up on the screen on this one.? With the Wachowskis directing the 1849 segment and the two futuristic ones and Tykwer overseeing the 1930s, 1970s and contemporary stories, ?Cloud Atlas? could have been a schizophrenic mess. The actors shuttled from sets in Scotland, Germany and Spain, changing costumes, characters and directors from day to day. ?I was most frightened about that, thinking, oh God, how?s it going to be with three directors? Am I going to be confused? Who do I listen to, and what?s it going to be like? But it was none of that,? Berry said. ?They spent so many years talking about it, honing their ideas and figuring it all out, they were very much on the same page.?

Brahimi's plan for Syria cease-fire takes two steps forward, one step back

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

United Nations special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said today that the government agreed to a cease-fire over the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha, but Syrian officials almost immediately dismissed his statement, claiming that it was still considering the proposal.

There are high stakes for the potential cease-fire, which is currently the only proposal on the table for ending the 19-month conflict that has killed between 20,000 and 34,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. But there seems to be little optimism that the three- or four-day break in violence will bring about a substantial change.

A cease-fire agreement in April (described as ?so fragile it could collapse with a single gunshot,? reported the Associated Press at the time) failed within days, with both rebels and the Army accusing one another of breaking the agreement.

"After the visit I made to Damascus, there is agreement from the Syrian government for a cease-fire during the Eid," Mr. Brahimi told a news conference at the Cairo-based Arab League. Rebel groups have also agreed to the truce ?in principle," Reuters reports.

RELATED ? Why no safe zone in Syria, yet? 5 complications

However, an hour after Brahimi's announcement, the Syrian government said it was still "studying" the proposal and would announce its decision tomorrow.

However, rebel sources earlier told the news agency there was ?little point if it could not be monitored and enforced,? according to a separate Reuters report, and Brahimi?s plan didn?t note the presence of international observers to monitor the cease-fire, according to the first report.

"If this humble initiative succeeds, we hope that we can build on it in order to discuss a longer and more effective cease-fire, and this has to be part of a comprehensive political process," Brahimi said.

Brahimi's announcement follows another bloody day in Syria. One of the few bakeries still operating in Aleppo was shelled yesterday, as about 100 people waited in line for bread, reports the Los Angeles Times. An estimated 20 people were killed and another 50 wounded in the blast in the Masaken Hanano neighborhood.

This was the third day in a row that the opposition-held neighborhood came under Army shelling. Abu al-Hasan, an activist from an Aleppo suburb, told The New York Times that residents in the area were too scared to leave their homes the past few days because of the intense shelling but ?finally took the risk in order to buy food for Eid al-Adha,? the widely celebrated holiday that starts at the end of the week. The N.Y. Times notes how important bakeries have become in the three-month battle over Aleppo, Syria?s largest city:

?[B]akeries in rebel-held areas of Aleppo have emerged as vitally important resources that are clearly potential targets for Syrian forces seeking to starve the insurgents and their sympathizers into submission. Many of the bakeries are run by the insurgents, who have learned how to bake bread as part of the war effort.

Nearly a dozen bakeries have been targeted in Aleppo since fighting broke out there. Abu Firas, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Council for Aleppo and its suburbs, told the L.A. Times that the Assad regime has targeted bakeries because it wants ?life to stop.?

"They are directly targeting the bakeries because many people gather there. Why are they shelling it? There aren't any Free Syrian Army fighters," Abu Firas said, referring to the main rebel fighting force, also known as the FSA.

The Syrian Army is relying more and more on air strikes as it has lost territory to rebel groups.

"Some of the bombs were so big they sucked in the air and everything crashes down, even four-story buildings. We used to have one or two rockets a day, now for the past 10 days it has become constant, we run from one shelter to another. They drop a few bombs and it's like a massacre," a 20-year-old refugee named Nabil told Reuters at a camp in the Syrian town of Atimah, which overlooks the Turkish border.

Bakeries aren?t the only targets. The BBC reports from the town of Marea near the Turkish border, about 20 miles north of Aleppo, that funeral processions, the weekly market, and other quotidian activities seem just as likely to be targeted by bombs.

Almost everyone we meet has lost someone to the enemy in the sky ? here, a boy was shot dead from the air as he rode his motor bike ? there, a group of teenage lads were blown to pieces by a bomb dropped from a MiG fighter as they loaded potatoes onto a truck.

There seems to be no object to the random bombing, other than to sow terror.

"It's revenge," says Yasser al-Haji, a businessman from Marea who moved abroad, then returned last year to join the revolution. "Marea was one of first cities to demonstrate.

"It's an economic war, too. Above all, they want to humiliate us for rising up against the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad," he adds.

The bakery hit yesterday in Aleppo was housed in a large warehouse, according to Abu al-Hasan who spoke to the N.Y. Times. He says it?s actually unclear whether the bakery was the target.

?The problem is those kinds of missiles are not guided to their intended targets,? he said. ?They?re not precise. They fall on random buildings.?

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees reports that there are now more than 358,000 Syrian refugees in the region, according to the L.A. Times. Last week alone more than 5,500 Syrians registered with UNHCR.

?The longer Syrians remain in exile, the more likely they are to seek help as their savings are depleted. Many refugees fled home with few resources because work has been disrupted for more than a year in some areas of Syria,? the LA Times reports.

With a potential cease-fire on the horizon, many are speculating about the future of Syria and President Bashar al-Assad. James Van de Velde, a lecturer at the Center for Advanced Studies at Johns Hopkins University writes in a commentary for The Jerusalem Post that no regime that follows Assad could be worse, ?though it may not be much better in the near term.?

Mr. Van de Velde lays out five potential outcomes in Syria, none of which he expects will include Assad:

1. Assad flees and those Alawite members of the regime who remain pledge to join and cooperate with the new (Sunni-dominated) Free Syrian Army (FSA) government (the optimal, ideal, Western-driven future, although sadly there is no evidence the United States is pursuing such an outcome)?.

2. Assad resigns at the direction of Russia, which creates a new Syrian government (a Russian-driven future). A UN-Russian plan creates a transitional government made up of FSA members and current regime elements, made possible and heavily influenced by Russia, which wishes to maintain a favored-nation status with the new Syrian government, which affords Russia special influence for pulling Assad. The United States is largely shut out of the new government, given the perception that the United States was indifferent to the opposition?.

3. Assad flees at the direction of Iran (an Iran-driven future). A UN plan creates a transitional government made up of FSA members and current regime elements, but one that is heavily influenced behind the scenes in Syria by Iran, which wishes to keep Syria a client state and to continue to support Lebanese Hezbollah through Syria. The United States is largely shut out, given the perception that the United States was indifferent to the opposition.

4. Assad flees or is killed and leaves behind chaos (a ?no one is driving? future). The FSA takes over the country; the Alawites are purged from the new government. There is a scramble among the FSA, al-Qaida in Syria, Lebanese Hezbollah and Iran to secure and control Syrian chemical and biological weapons and shape the new government. The outcome of such violence is uncertain. here is no sympathy for the United States, given the perception that the United States was indifferent to the opposition.

5. Assad flees or is killed and Alawite members of the SSRC, the Republican Guard and former regime elements ? including thousands of private Alawite militia, retreat to the Latakia Province and create a defensive enclave, armed with Syrian regime weapons, perhaps including chemical and biological weapons (a sectarian-driven future) ? perhaps the most likely future now....

5 Tips to Save on Business Travel for your Company ...

Business travel can be one of your biggest expenses when traveling is a core component of your business. If you are meeting with clients, traveling to seminars, or visiting satellite offices around the globe, you will need a large budget to cover your airfare, your lodging expenses, and also the money you spend on dining while you are out of town. If you are looking for ways to reduce your travel budget, here are 5 valuable tips on how to save money without compromising the health of your business.

1. Book a Private Jet

You might be surprised at how much money your business can save on traveling expenses by booking a private jet. Most of your travel budget is spent on airfare and other related expenses like parking at the airport. If you have several associates traveling at once, it might be more affordable to book a private jet so that the associates can all travel at once. The associates can also drive to the site of departure together to prevent having to write off long-term parking as a business expense.

2. Use Corporate Credit Cards

Another effective way to save money on travel expenses is to have corporate credit cards issued to each traveling associate. This will help you cut down on how much time and money you spend on bookkeeping and will eliminate the need to process reimbursement checks. You may also be able to take advantage of rewards that come with the card that offer discounts for hotels, dining, and airfare. Make Sure You Have Spending Limits. If some employees like to order lobster dinners on the company?s buck, you might want to consider establishing spending limits that all of the employees are familiar with. You can set spending limits on food, rental cars, hotel rooms, or anything else the company will pay for. Make sure the limits the reasonable but very specific so that you?re traveling associates never get too spend happy.

3. Avoid Letting Your Employees Make Their Travel Plans

It is very tempting for your employees to book the most convenient flight or the more luxurious hotel if they are allowed to make their own arrangements. If you want to save money, you should try to centralize travel plans as much as possible. You can hire an agency to make the travel arrangements for you and they will make the arrangements based on the lowest cost. These agencies are also very good at teaching you how to save money.

4. Pay for a Taxi Instead of Parking

Do you know how much long-term parking can cost at the airport when you are away for 7 days or more? Now, consider how many employees you have attending an extended meeting and you will see how quickly the parking expense will add up.

5. Have employees travel to the airport together

It is very important to take time to write up a detailed travel policy so that there is never a question about what is covered and what is not covered by the company. You need to make sure you cover reasonable expenses. You also need to make sure your employees and managers can make it to their meetings with time to spare so that they are not late due to delayed flights. Consider trying these tips to save money on travel expenses and more of the revenue you earn can be considered profits.

    Fern-finding scientists immortalize Lady Gaga

Duke University reports on the new fern genus, named after Lady Gaga.

    By Alan Boyle

Lady Gaga is already a huge name in the music world, but now she's a scientific name as well ? thanks to fans at Duke University who named an entire genus of ferns after the gender-bending pop star.

Nineteen species in Central and South America, Mexico, Arizona and Texas belong to the newly designated genus Gaga, the researchers report in a paper published by Systematic Botany. The genus is a grouping of closely related species that was split off from an earlier named genus known as Cheilanthes on the basis of subtle differences (for example, the number of spores per sporangeum) as well as DNA analysis.

The new genus' 19 species include two new ones: Gaga germanotta was found in Costa Rica and has a species name that pays tribute to the family of the artist, whose birth name was Stefani Germanotta. The species name for Gaga monstraparva, a newfound type of Mexican fern, honors Gaga's fans. ("Monstra parva" is Latin for "Little Monster," Gaga's term of endearment for her followers.)

It's clear from Duke's news release that Gaga's Little Monsters include the Duke researchers who proposed the new genus name.

"We wanted to name this genus for Lady Gaga because of her fervent defense of equality and individual expression," said biologist Kathleen Pryer, director of the Duke Herbarium. "And as we started to consider it, the ferns themselves gave us more reasons why it was a good choice."

Duke pointed out that the ferns go through a stage in which they have somewhat fluid definitions of gender. During their bisexual reproductive stage, the ferns' gametophyte takes on the appearance of a blue-green Gaga costume. Even the DNA analysis turned up a Gaga angle: One of the genus' distinguishing strings of base pairs reads GAGA (guanine-alanine-guanine-alanine).

    Duke University

One of the costumes Lady Gaga wears for her performances (left) reminded researchers of the color and shape of a gametophyte from the species in the genus Gaga (right).

But the main motivation for the naming is to pay tribute to a superstar who's been an inspiration.

"We often listen to her music while we do our research," Pryer said. "We think that her second album, 'Born This Way, is enormously empowering, especially for disenfranchised people and communities like LGBT, ethnic groups, women?? and scientists who study odd ferns."

Lady Gaga is a "remarkable, unexpected, perfect" choice for the scientific tribute, said Duke faculty member Cathy N. Davidson, whose was involved in a MacArthur Foundation initiative that helped the pop star create a national anti-bullying project called the Born This Way Foundation.

"Encouraging her fans and kids everywhere to be brave, bold, unique, creative and smart is what Lady Gaga is about," Davidson said in Duke's news release. "It's rare that a celebrity so young gives back so much to society."

There may be future opportunities out there for performers who count botanists among their fans. Pryer, who is president of the American Fern Society as well as the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, points out that genetic analysis may well reorganize the family tree of ferns over the long term ? leading to more scientific categories that will need new names.

This performance helped inspire the Duke researchers' decision to name a fern genus after Lady Gaga: Lady Gaga performs "Poker Face" and a medley of "Speechless" and "Your Song" with Elton John at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on CBS. ? 2010 The Recording Academy

Taylor Kinney tells TODAY's Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb that he feels lucky to be dating superstar Lady Gaga and discusses his role as a tough guy lieutenant battling an addiction to pain medication on the new NBC show "Chicago Fire.''

    More celebrity species:

In addition to Pryer, the authors of "Gaga: A New Fern Genus Segregated from Cheilanthes (Pteridaceae)" include Fay-Wei Li and Michael D. Windham. The research was funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

Hofstra University Holds Conference on Sikh Literature & Film

Hofstra University Holds Conference on Sikh Literature & Film

    SIMRAN JEET SINGH

    ?

    ?

    ?

Last week, Hofstra University hosted the second presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney.

This past weekend, Hofstra University hosted another major event ? an academic conference entitled "Sikhi[sm], Literature and Film," under the aegis of the Sardarni Kuljit Kaur Bindra Chair in Sikh Studies.?

It opened Friday evening (October 19, 2012) with a keynote lecture by Dr. Nikhil Pal Singh of New York University entitled "The Remainders of White Supremacy: Reflections on Oak Creek."

In his address, Dr. Nikhil Pal Singh discussed the events of Oak Creek in the context of America?s long history of racism, and he challenged the popular assertion that we live in a post-racial society. He briefly walked through examples of violence and racism in America, with reference to prominent figures such as Thomas Jefferson and Frederick Douglass, and he asserted that race is a social construction that creates fractures within civil societies. He then pointed to the examples of Balbir Singh Sodhi and Oak Creek to suggest that the same structures and processes shaping group identities continue to operate within modern-day America.

He also argued that the modern racism draws upon histories of racial signification and have been codified by law.

The convener of the conference, Professor Balbinder Singh Bhogal -- who is also Hofstra University's Chair of Sikh Studies -- illuminated these comments by pointing out that we would be wrong to simply blame Wade Michael Page for the violence, and he argued that we must reflect on broader social conditions that cultivated this event. Dr Balbinder Singh pointed to colonialism, imperialism, and neo-colonialism as broader practices of domination and power relations that require critique and reconsideration.

Saturday and Sunday (Oct 20 and 21) primarily consisted of academic panels that focused on topics related to literary genres and visual cultures.

In the first panel, Dr. Raj Kumar Hans of the University of Baroda in Gujarat, India, presented his work on an interesting text entitled Sri Guru Katha composed by Bhai Jaita (i.e., Bhai Jivan Singh). Dr. Hans places this text in the 1690s and believes that this is the first historical document that refers to the adoption of the Sikh identity, including the punj kakkaar (5 Ks) and the dastaar (turban). He also argued that this text is the first available text composed by a Khalsa Sikh, and he speculated that the text has been neglected because of its "low-caste" provenance.

Other Saturday panels featured a wider variety of papers relating to literature, politics, and fine arts.

On Saturday evening, conference attendees were treated to the work of two documentarians.

Safina Kaur Uberoi spoke to and showed clips from two of her documentaries,?Who Do You Think You Are, Meera Syal? and My Mother India. The first film narrated a woman?s return to her village in Punjab and her discovery of her family?s rich history of participating in social justice efforts, particularly in the Jaito Morchas during the struggle for gurdwara reform as well as independence in the early 20th century.

Harjant Singh Gill of Towson University screened his film ? Roots of Love ? which discussed the phenomenon of Sikh males in Punjab who have been opting to abandon their turbans and cut their hair. Harjant?s film was incredibly powerful, especially in its ability to capture the deep emotions of love and pain that makeup the relationship between Sikhs and their unshorn hair.

The discussions following the films were quite lively, and a number of audience members expressed their discomfort with specific scenes as well as some of the ideas expressed by subjects of the documentary. One audience member openly wondered why there are no works that consider the Sikh identity from a ?joyous and more positive perspective,? and
another audience member asked why women are so often left out in our discussions of Sikh identity.

The conference resumed Sunday morning with two panels entitled ?Film, Cinema, & Internet? and ?Internet & Music.? The papers presented in these sessions were especially interesting as they dealt with diverse representations of Sikhs in the media, as well as the ways in which Sikhs have participated in different media.

For example, Dr. Geetanjali Singh Chanda of Yale University discussed various issues encountered in the production and circulation of ?Amu,? a 2005 film directed by Shonali Bose.

Natasha Raheja of New York University analyzed the viral video of ?The Warriors of Goja,? a group of young Sikh males who won the televised Indian talent show ?Adhurs? earlier this year.

Three other papers dealt with Sikh musical expressions, specifically as they relate to traditions of kirtan, dhadhi, and hip-hop.

Overall, the conference was a great success that drew a spectrum of scholars from diverse backgrounds. Presenters came from a variety of disciplines, institutions, and geographical locations, and their diverse perspectives helped enrich the conversation throughout the weekend. A handful of students from Hofstra University and some members the local Sikh community also attended the events, and those who did remained engaged throughout the weekend.

The thought-provoking presentations stimulated sustained conversations throughout the weekend, and I left the conference with a number of new friends, thoughts, and questions. From my perspective, these are the hallmarks of a successful academic conference.

Pepsi vs Coke? What is a Value Proposition? ? Internet Marketing ...

Coke vs Pepsi - Internet Marketing - Online Marketing - Small Business Marketing Toronto

Web-planning for Success: Part 2 ? What is a Value Proposition?

Do you ever stop and think about why you purchase one product over another?? For example, do you drink Pepsi or Coke? (Oh, the classic debate!)? Do you drive a domestic car, say, Ford or a foreign car, say, Nissan?

Well, if you actually analyze ?why? you make the purchase, you might realize the factors at play, for example, brand identity, cost, or specific features. In the end, it boils down to the different value proposition that each company creates in their marketing strategy for you, their target market.? It is this value proposition that really influences your decision to purchase, consciously or sub-consciously.

The first question I often ask an entrepreneur and business owner is: ?what is the value proposition of your business??? Basically, why should I buy from you?? The responses I get are very articulate and thought-out; they are often GREAT mission statements but not value propositions.

Having a strong value proposition and being able to communicate it is a fundamental component to marketing and selling your business, ultimately, growing it. ?It is at the core of any successful marketing strategy, in turn, it extends to your Internet marketing strategy and online identity.

In order to create an effective value proposition, you first need to need to understand what ?value? is.? Understanding ?value? requires you to think like your best customer; creating a value proposition requires you to think like a great entrepreneur.

In its simplest definition, a value proposition is a statement describing the unique benefits delivered by your business to solve a specific problem of your target customer. ??A value proposition should provide clarity for a solution to a problem; in best cases, even identifying a problem the target customers does not realize they have!

    Myths of a Value Proposition

    1. A value proposition goes beyond the company?s positioning on a single attribute or feature.? For example, ?we sell our cola in a glass bottle?.
    2. It is not just a technology.

A strong value proposition is important for your internet-marketing strategy because your Internet marketing strategy is simply another touch-point with your potential customer. ?So, your communication message needs to be clear and impactful.

It won?t matter if you are Tweeting 15 times per week, running 10 email marketing campaigns per month or participating in 5 tradeshows per year.? If you can?t clearly communicate/convince your potential customer why they should buy from you, then success will be hard to come by.? This is why your value proposition is so important.

Your website is at the core of your online marketing strategy and there should be no mistake that all of your online activity should bring the prospect back to your business? website where you can take them through the decision making process, ultimately, convincing them to purchase from you.

Every successful business and online marketing strategy has a clear value proposition.? Be that business and you?ll be successful.

In the next part of the ?Web-planning for Success? blog series, I?ll break-down and explain the different components of the value-proposition statement.

CHICAGO (October 22, 2012) ? Changing your mindset around? money and budgeting for everyday financial emergencies are the fastest ways to improve your financial situation, according to advice from three nationally known personal finance experts at the CashNetUSA Manage Your Money seminar September 27.

The three experts ? Charlotte Stallings, Max Jaffe?and Princess Clark-Wendel ? offered Chicagoans practical advice on how to successfully create and manage a budget and become debt free at the University Center Conference Chicago.

?We wanted to provide Chicagoans with guidance and a big dose of encouragement which is needed by many folks in these times of financial uncertainty and struggle,? said Keith Weinberger, Senior Director at CashNetUSA.

Stallings, a Houston-based financial expert, the oldest child in a cash-strapped home led by her single mother, outlined three steps one can take to immediately regain control of their finances. The first is to make the decision that it is time for a change and accept the advice of experts, even though one has tried the techniques and not seen immediate results.? The second is to build an emergency fund, getting a part-time job or hosting a garage sale to put some extra change in your pocket. The third is to improve communication around money. ?Be open about your goals and stick to them,? advised Stallings.

The founder and CEO of Dallas-based Spending Solutions, Jaffe reminded the crowd we ?earn? money as opposed to ?making? it based on the exchange of our time and talents in the job environment.? He then advised participants to look ?forward? in your money management instead of being reactive to your budget.? Jaffe suggested tracking your expenses for 21 days to clearly see your spending habits and understand what needs to change.? He recommends using 10-15% of your income to both pay off debt and save for a ready-to-use emergency account.

Chicagoan Princess Clark-Wendel concluded the seminar with personal encouragement on how to live life debt and worry free.? ?Keep dreaming big and do not let debt take over your life,? encouraged Wendel-Clark.? ?It?s not going to be easy but by being public about your situation, making sacrifices and celebrating the little victories, anyone can change their financial situation.?

The seminar followed the release of CashNetUSA.com?s new survey that Americans are facing a drought of rainy day funds to handle unexpected emergencies. Twenty-three percent of Americans have less than $100 in savings to cover an emergency expense if it happened today while forty-six percent report having less than $800. The findings reflect the growing percentage of individuals with varying socio-economic backgrounds living paycheck to paycheck.

The FDIC also recently released figures that highlight how nearly one in three Americans are either unbanked or underbanked; a similar percentage (29.3%) do not have savings accounts.

More than 100 wanted neo-Nazis roam free - The Local

More than100 neo-Nazis wanted by the police are living free in Germany despite arrest warrants issued against them, the interior minister said on Saturday.

Hans-Peter Friedrich told Die Welt newspaper that in mid-September, 110 far-right extremists who should be in jail were missing ? living in hiding somewhere in the country.

His interior ministry asked all of the 16 German states to provide figures for how many arrest warrants had been issued on neo-Nazis.

A tally is made every six months, but no follow-up information is recorded ? for instance if the suspect is taken to court, the outcome is not always added to a person's file, Der Spiegel magazine said on Saturday.

This needed to improve, said Friedrich, who is pushing for better communication between national and state intelligence services. He added that this included closer communication between criminal police investigators and news organisations.

Domestic intelligence agencies and the police have come under serious criticism since the neo-Nazi terrorist cell calling itself the National Socialist Underground was unveiled ? having allegedly killed ten people over a period of years.

Friedrich said he was not expecting copycat attacks, despite the 110 wanted neo-Nazis being free.

    var adx_strHtml = (     new StringBuilder("<html><body bgcolor='#000000'><a target='_blank' href="))     .Append(adx_strClickStr)     .Append("><img width='100%' height='10%' onerror='imageLoadFailed()' src='")     .Append(adx_strAdURL)     .Append("' alt='' />")     .Append("</a></body></html>")     .ToString();

Now my question is how should I catch the event on clicking the ad and check the link and perform the particular task. please suggest me some points...Thanks
