Chris Hoy believes revolutionary 'hot pants' can ... - BBC World News

Team GB?s cyclists have some of the most famous thighs in sport ? and now they also have the hottest, thanks to electric ?hot pants?. Sir Chris Hoy will be aiming to defend two of his three Olympic titles from Beijing (Picture: PA) Sir Chris Hoy and co. wear the heated Adidas Adipower trousers for a few minutes before each race to ensure a top performance. The battery-operated technology has been given the thumbs-up by Hoy, who said: ?As soon as you take them off? your legs feel like they are ready to go.? The revolutionary technology was trialled for 18 months prior to the Games and warms the cyclists? thighs to an optimum temperature of around 38 degrees ? much like the tyre warmers used in Formula 1. Sir Chris Hoy models the new ?hot pants? (Picture: Getty Images) They also reduce the need for lengthy periods on the warm-up bike which can induce fatigue and have negative implications on on-track performance. Defending Olympic champion, Victoria Pendleton, said: ?They heat up almost instantaneously, you feel the temperature on your quads and hamstrings, and it really makes the difference. ?As a team we talk about marginal gains a lot. You?re making sure that every tiny detail is taken care of, finding every advantage possible to make things run smoothly.? Although the team had been testing the 21st Century advancement long prior to the world championships in Melbourne, they didn?t wear them at the Hisense Arena in order to protect their secret weapon heading into London 2012. The heated trousers have been four years in the making, with British Cycling, Loughborough University and Adidas all contributing to their development.

IPhone appeal dims as Samsung shines

(AP) ? The latest iPhone looks much the same as the first iPhone, which came out more than five years ago. That hasn't been a problem for Apple ? until, now.

The pace of iPhone sales has slowed, Apple revealed last week. Part of the problem is that the competition has found a formula that works: thinner phones with big screens that make the iPhone look small and chubby.

For a dose of smartphone envy, iPhone owners need to look no further than Samsung Electronics Co., the number-one maker of smartphones in the world. Its newest flagship phone, the Galaxy S III, is sleek and wafer-thin.

By comparison, the iPhone "is getting a bit long in the tooth," says Ramon Llamas, an analyst with research firm IDC.

Apple has become the world's most valuable company on the back of the iPhone, which makes up nearly half of its revenue. IPhone sales are still growing, but the question of how fast they're growing is of keen interest to investors. The iPhone certainly has room to grow: only one in six smartphones sold globally in the second quarter had an Apple logo on its back.

When Apple reported financial results for its latest quarter last week, a new phenomenon was revealed: Buyers started pulling back on iPhone purchases just six months after the launch of the latest iPhone model.

Apple executives blamed the tepid sales on "rumors and speculation" that may have caused some consumers to wait for the next iPhone, which is due in the fall. But in the past, iPhone sales have stayed strong nine months after the new model is launched, then dipped as people began holding off, waiting for the new model.

In the April to June period, Apple sold 26 million phones, 28 percent more than it did in the same quarter last year.

Most other phone makers "would kill" for those numbers, says Stephen Baker, an analyst with research firm NPD Group.

The exception is Samsung, which has solidified its position at the world's largest maker of smartphones. Analysts believe it made just over 50 million smartphones in the second quarter, or nearly twice as many as Apple. (The company doesn't release specific figures.) Its smartphone sales have nearly tripled in a year.

Most of Samsung's sales comprise cheaper smartphones that don't compete directly with the iPhone. Its flagship phones, though, have emerged as the iPhone's chief rivals.

Samsung and Apple have a complicated relationship. They're rivals in the smartphone and tablet-computer markets, and are set to square off in a high-profile trial over mobile patents in San Francisco this week. Samsung is one of Apple's largest suppliers of chips and displays, and Apple is one of Samsung's largest clients.

Though Apple is known as a relentless innovator, the iPhone's screen has been the same size ? 3.5 inches on the diagonal ? since the first iPhone came out. It was a big screen for the time, but among the competition, screen sizes have crept up.

Samsung has increased the screen size of its Galaxy series with every model since it debuted in 2010. The Galaxy S had a screen that measured 4 inches diagonally, and was followed by the S II, at 4.3 inches. The S III, the latest model, measures 4.8 inches. The screen is nearly twice as large as the iPhone's. Yet the Galaxy is thinner and lighter than an iPhone.

Samsung has also achieved surprising success with an even bigger phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note. Its 5.3-inch screen makes it somewhat awkward to hold to the ear, but customers don't seem to mind, or perhaps they value the large screen and included stylus more.

Aside from design, Apple is inflexible in another way: by releasing a new phone only one per year, it lets the competition create new phones with features the iPhone doesn't have and lets them go unchallenged, at least until the new iPhone comes out.

"Apple's schedule leaves the other ten or nine months of the year wide open for everybody else," says Llamas.

For instance, the newest Samsung phones can use the latest high-speed data networks in the U.S., and talk to payment terminals in stores, so they can act as smart "credit cards."

Samsung times its product launches to take maximum advantage of the lull in iPhone sales that usually precedes the launch of a new model. The S III went on sale in Europe in May and in the U.S. in June.

The rest of the competition is in disarray, and hasn't been able to capitalize in the same way on Apple's rigid release schedule and conservative design. Nokia Corp., until recently the world's largest phone maker, is in sharp retreat and is conducting a complete revamp of its smartphones. Research In Motion Ltd. is stuck with outdated software for its BlackBerrys at least until it launches a new operating system next year. HTC Corp. of Taiwan is suffering from marketing missteps in the last few years. LG Electronics, another Korean company, hasn't been able to keep up with Samsung when it comes to high-end phones, or with cheaper manufacturers on the low end.

Together, Samsung and Apple make half of the world's smartphones, and since competitors are losing money or breaking even, account for nearly all of the profits in the industry.

"Samsung is the only company that didn't really buckle under the weight of the iPhone 4S. Good, solid devices and good, solid marketing behind them," Llamas says.

Analysts now expect the new iPhone to arrive in September or October, probably with a slightly bigger screen. Sticking to one screen size has served Apple well, Baker says, but he sees the company moving with the times, as it's done many times before.

"When they have the reputation and the brand loyalty that they have, you don't have to be the first to market" with new features, Baker says. "You don't have to take that risk."

Philippine gunmakers take aim in election year

In the Philippines, they vote with their trigger fingers. Elections mean big business for illegal gunsmiths, who are looking forward to 2013 mid-term polls.

With election-related violence commonplace, the Philippines imposes a ban on the carrying of guns for six months, from campaigning to the proclamation of winners.

With legal access denied, Filipinos simply turn to the many illegal gunsmiths who ply their trade in back alleys and on the edge of rice fields despite government crackdowns.

In Danao City, in the northeast of central Cebu island, they are already anticipating a windfall.

"There's actually huge demand for guns, especially now and because of the elections next year," said a 33-year-old gunsmith, who asked to be named only as Remo, as he hammered away at bits of scrap metal in a makeshift factory in Danao.

Loud music drowned out the noise of Remo's workshop on the edge of a dry creek, hidden from view by thick bamboo groves, as he and two assistants hammered, filed and drilled away.

"We are actually having some difficulty in keeping up with the orders because it usually takes at least two weeks to make one .45 caliber pistol, even if I work 16 hours a day," he said.

Legal industry
As the pro- and anti-gun lobbies in the United States agonize over how to respond to yet another massacre of innocents, in the Philippines many want even more liberal gun laws to boost production of a small but growing legal industry.

Guns have long been part of everyday life in the Philippines, especially since the end of World War Two.

After the war, farmers took up arms during agrarian unrest in the late 1940s and early 1950s and then a Maoist insurgency that has become one of the world's longest-running conflicts.

Today, all private security guards in the Philippines carry either handguns or shotguns, or both. Guns are a common sight in shopping malls, government and private offices, banks, restaurants and even schools.

"When we were children, we were already surrounded by guns. It was the world of our fathers," said Elmer Genzon, a third-generation gunsmith who once made "paltik", or illegal weapons, out of scrap metal and bits of angle iron.

"We grew up making guns."

According to www.gunpolicy.org, a site hosted by the University of Sydney's School of Public Health in Australia, there are about 3.9 million guns -- legal and illegal -- held by civilians in the Philippines, or about 4.7 per 100 people.

That puts the Philippines 105th place on a list of 179 countries, tiny in comparison to the 88.8 per 100 in the United States and behind even Australia with 15 per 100.

While it is impossible to count the number of illegal guns in the Philippines, the national police estimate there are about 350,000, again paltry in comparative terms to Central and South American weapons hotspots like Guatemala, Honduras and Colombia.

Yet the Philippines suffers worryingly high gun-crime rates.

According to the latest available figures from the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, there were 8.9 homicides per 100,000 people in 2003, by far the worst in Asia and outstripping Europe.

While not at the levels of Central and South America, the number was still almost triple that of the United States, which had 3.3 homicides per 100,000 people the same year.

Illegal guns are not just carried by criminal gangs, Maoist rebels and Muslim separatists. They also belong to civilians and politicians who keep private armies.

Investigations into the Ampatuan family, a political clan linked to the 2009 massacre of 57 people, including dozens of journalists, found more than 1,000 high-powered weapons, including mortars and .50 caliber machineguns.

Health plan
In the 2004 elections, authorities decided to crack down on illegal gunsmiths in Cebu. There had been more desultory attempts to act against an industry dating back to the early 1900s.

Police closed the Genzon family's home factory on the edge of a rice field during the 2004 crackdown.

Like other gunsmiths from his hometown, he was soon working at the government-registered Shooters' Arms Manufacturing factory about 25 km (15 miles) down the road in Mandaue City.

"We no longer have to worry about police raids and we also have a steady source of income, plus some health and other social benefits," Genzon, 33, told Reuters while he wrapped a handcrafted model of a 1911 Colt .45 destined for a dealer in Rochester, New York.

A small army of 400 workers assembles revolvers and pistols at the Mandaue factory, which exports guns to the United States, Australia, Italy and Thailand.

Factory owner Romulo de Leon III, a second-generation gun dealer, quickly recognized the unusual skills developed by the illegal, backyard gunsmiths when he decided to switch from selling imported weapons to making his own.

His partly automated factory now produces about 20,000 guns a year, with up to 85 percent of them sold abroad, making him the second largest gun manufacturer in the Philippines.

With cheap labor and Filipino ingenuity, de Leon wants to expand into new markets in Eastern Europe and South America.

With more foreign markets in their gunsights, legal manufacturers hope President Benigno Aquino, a gun enthusiast who shoots competitively, will help liberalize gun laws.

"What we want is a more balanced gun legislation, not too restrictive, but we also understand that guns must be regulated," said Demetrio Tuason, head of the largest and oldest manufacturer in the Philippines, Armscor, at a Manila gun show.

Existing laws allow Filipinos to own one "long" firearm -- a rifle or shotgun -- and one handgun. Guns are meant to be licensed and owners must have permits to carry them in public.

Tuason wants gun licenses more like driving licenses, allowing people to "own as many guns as they can afford".

Not surprisingly, gun sellers also want to expand the industry, worth about 2.5 billion pesos ($59.37 million). Export receipts grew fourfold to $23.4 million between 2000-11.

But, just like in the United States, there seems little appetite to change existing laws. "That's not a priority right now," Aquino told Reuters in an interview earlier this month.

There are 34 gun-related bills before both houses of parliament, some seeking looser laws and others more control.

Supporters of two prominent bills seeking to outlaw civilians carrying guns in public and stiffer penalties for possession of illegal weapons have all but given up hope.

Much like the United States, guns are so deeply ingrained in Philippines culture that they don't expect the July 20 shooting in a Colorado cinema, in which 12 people were killed and 58 wounded, will have much of an impact.

"For the last 22 years we've been telling our lawmakers ... to pass a strict gun control law but nothing has happened," said Nandy Pacheco of the Gunless Society group.

"Our gun laws are encouraging a culture of guns, a culture of violence. When do we act? Are we waiting for a similar attack to happen here in our movie houses?"

Former Resident Needs Our Help After Fire Ravages Family Home ...

Lake Wales, Florida ? Susanne Moody Nicholas? was raised here in Lake Wales and graduated from LWHS, class of 91, She currently lives in Ormond Beach with her husband, Robert,? and 3 children. The family was devastated by a fire which tore through their 6yr old daughters bedroom. The bedroom was also shared with Susanne?s? 13 year old niece. The family also lost two beloved dogs. The fire was July10th, but the family is still struggling. The fire did not completely destroy the home, but smoke, heat? and water damage has made the home currently unlivable.

The fire started in the bedroom of the 6yr old daughter. The fire was determined to have started from a electrical spark.? The little girl? woke up with her blanket on fire & pushed it off of her and ran out to back door. Susanne (mom) heard a bang and went to check on the kids and found the child?s bed engulfed in flames. Not realizing her daughter had gotten out Susanne frantically began pulling on the fiery sheets to make sure she was not on the bed. The bang that Susanne heard was the little girl slamming her door hoping that it would keep the fire from reaching her mommy and daddy. As you can image the young girl was seriously traumatized.

The fire? destroyed the children?s beds, toys, cloths and the family has had to move somewhere else until the home can be repaired. Many items in the house were melted, burned or ruined by smoke damage. The family essentially needs everything for a new home. Friends and family have helped, but many items are still needed. If you have a desire or feel compelled to help the family please contact them to determine what they currently may need. They can be contacted at 386-566-9555 and items can be mailed to a family member to Susanne Nicholas at 49 Seaside Drive Ormond Beach Fl 32176.

Defense: Shooting suspect was seeing psychiatrist

(AP) ? The former graduate student accused in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting was being treated by a psychiatrist at the university where he studied, the first indication that he may have sought help before the rampage that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

Attorneys for James Holmes, 24, made the disclosure in a court motion Friday as they sought to discover the source of leaks to some media outlets that he sent the psychiatrist a package containing a notebook with descriptions of an attack.

The motion said the leaks jeopardized Holmes' right to a fair trial and violated a judge's gag order.

Holmes' lawyers added that the package contained communications between Holmes and his psychiatrist that should be shielded from public view. The document describes Holmes as a "psychiatric patient" of Dr. Lynne Fenton.

The motion did not reveal when Holmes began seeing Fenton or whether he was being treated for a mental illness. Legal analysts expect Holmes' attorneys to use an insanity defense at trial. Holmes is scheduled to be arraigned Monday. A hearing on the new defense motion also is scheduled that day.

Calls to Holmes' lawyer and the state public defender's office were not immediately returned, nor was a message left with Fenton's office. A spokeswoman for the Arapahoe County prosecutor's office declined comment.

The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services. An online resume stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as 5 to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist. Schizophrenia was listed as one of her research interests.

Fenton was disciplined by the Colorado Medical Board in 2004 for prescribing herself Xanax while her mother was dying, state records show. She also was disciplined for prescribing the sleep aid Ambien and the allergy medicine Claritin for her husband, and painkillers for an employee who suffered from chronic headaches.

Fenton worked for the U.S. Air Force in Texas as an acupuncturist before joining the University of Colorado in 2005.

A 1998 Denver Post article quotes a Colorado acupuncturist named Lynne Fenton discussing how acupuncture could be used to enhance women's busts.

In the week since the July 20 attack at an Aurora movie theater, few details have emerged about Holmes' life ? especially the year he spent as a graduate student in Colorado. Holmes enrolled in a doctoral program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado-Denver Anschutz medical campus in June 2011. He left without explanation in June.

University officials have refused to disclose much more about Holmes, citing an order from the judge barring them from releasing information that would "impede an ongoing investigation." Staff, professors and classmates have been mum about Holmes' life at the school.

Holmes' appearance at his first court hearing on Monday stunned the victims' families and fueled speculation about the state of his mental health. His hair dyed a shocking comic-book shade of orange-red, he looked sleepy and, at times, inattentive.

Prosecutors said they didn't know if he was being medicated. Friday's defense motion, however, was the first confirmation from the defense that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist and that he had sent a package to the doctor.

The package was seized by authorities on Monday after it was discovered in the mailroom at the university. It's unclear if it was sent before the attack at the July 20 midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" that left 12 dead and dozens of others injured.

Authorities said Holmes legally purchased four guns before the attack at Denver-area sporting goods stores ? a semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and two pistols. To buy the guns, Holmes had to pass background checks that can take as little as 20 minutes in Colorado.

Federal law bars from purchasing firearms people who have been found mentally defective by a judge or who have been committed to a mental health institution, said Benjamin Van Houten of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

States can impose additional restrictions, but Colorado does not.

"That is why it's important for states to look at going beyond federal law in this area," Van Houten said.

At a press conference earlier this week, university officials acknowledged that students in the neuroscience program are carefully monitored. They said a graduate student experiencing problems would normally be referred to student support services.

On Friday, 21 news organizations, including The Associated Press, filed a motion asking the judge to reverse his order sealing court records in the case. The news organizations claimed the order means even a complete list of court filings is kept secret.

District Court Judge William Blair Sylvester has ordered all motions by prosecutors and the defense be filed under seal so they cannot be inspected by the public. Sylvester also ordered the university not to release records on Holmes.

The news organizations include The Denver Post, three other newspapers, four Denver television stations, six broadcast networks and two newspaper groups.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office declined to comment. Holmes' attorneys didn't immediately return a call.

Meanwhile, authorities also are investigating whether Holmes practiced shooting in the remote mountains northwest of Denver.

The owner of C&M Guns in the town of Hot Sulphur Springs said local authorities, as well as agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, have asked him whether Holmes came into his shop, which is near a public shooting range. Clark Branstetter said he didn't remember seeing Holmes.

KUSA-TV in Denver first reported the visit to that shop and another unnamed one in the area.

The public shooting range is owned by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. A spokesman wouldn't comment on whether Holmes used the range. The range isn't staffed and no records are kept of who uses it.

In late June, Holmes tried to join a private gun range east of Aurora but he never showed up.

There are many dangers of buying your kid a cell phone such as viewing inappropriate content, cyber bullying etc. Most of the above dangers can be overcome by choosing the right mobile phone for your kid.

All portable phones are equipped with a SIM card, this is what makes the phone work, send SMS etc and it is this piece of technology that allows for simple mobile phone tracking without the need to install GPS devices or low jack the telephone.

More interesting features of this amazing Nokia mobile is that it has an in-built speaker phone, a wireless Web browser and the ability to sync with your PC. The integrated music player offers amazing stereo sound that is sure to keep you swaying to its beats. Whats more, the GPS tracker and Nokia Maps facility will make sure you never need to ask for directions! A personal organizer is sure to be a big hit among the professional circle. The Nokia 2730 also has a choice of adding extra memory with a MicroSD card slot. You can also attach a 3.5mm headset jack, if required. You would certainly agree that all this truly makes this Nokia mobile a super world phone!

In case you happen to be worried that the man or woman you intend to monitor will uncover that you are watching them, you shouldn?t be. The software program is completely invisible therefore the person is not going to realize that it?s placed on their cellphone. That is very important since you don?t want them to understand or know that you?re supervising them.

Whether it is with regard to telephone numbers or mobile phone numbers, it does not matter. Have you asked yourself how one can spy on a cell phone?

IP finance: Cyprus offers 2% -- can you do better?

A couple of years ago, IP Finance posted a question: "Intellectual property tax havens: where's best?" ?This question didn't receive many responses at the time, but IP Finance's readership has grown greatly since May 2010 and the same question, posted today, might attract far more answers.

This slightly historical musing has been prompted by the news, from Stefan Nolte of Shanda Consult, Cyprus, that?2% is the effective tax rate on income from IP in Cyprus. Stefan writes:
"A recent amendment to the tax law, in force since 06 July 2012, provides 80 % tax exemption on income from IP. The remaining 20 % of the income from IP are taxed at ordinary 10 % corporation tax, which results in an effective tax rate of 2 % on the income from Intellectual Property.?
Intellectual Property includes: patents, brand names, software development, copyrights on music, visual productions (film, TV etc), book etc.?
Income from IP: income from the sales of IP or from license fees received for granting the right to use IP.?
Depreciation of IP development costs or IP purchase costs is 20 % annually".
Can readers from other jurisdictions improve on this? And can they also warn of possible downsides that low-tax seekers might not appreciate if locating their IP portfolios in tax havens?

What is subtropical plankton doing in Arctic waters?

The subtropical plankton in Arctic waters are likely the result of an isolated pulse of water that carried them outside their natural habitat, say scientists.

This may sound like a story about the surprising effects of global warming, but it isn't. At least not entirely.

That's because the researchers believe these warm-water invaders, called Radiolaria, are likely the result of an isolated pulse of water that carried them beyond the usual extent of the northbound Gulf Stream, a current that travels from the Gulf of Mexico into the northern Atlantic Ocean.

Radiolaria have ornate, glassy shells, and they eat algae and other microscopic organisms. Different species live in different temperature ranges. [Spectacular Photos of Sea Creatures]

In 2010,?a ship operated by the Norwegian Polar Institute collected plankton samples northwest of the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. Of the 145 types of organisms in these samples, 98 came from farther south, as far as the tropics.

The discovery of living organisms like these in the northern waters was unprecedented, but the quirk in ocean circulation that scientists believe carried them this far north is not. Pulses of warm water have reached along the Norwegian coast and into the Arctic basin several times in the 20th century. What's more fossil evidence suggests warm-water plankton may have become temporarily established in the Arctic multiple times during past millennia.

"This doesn't happen continuously ? but it happens," lead researcher Kjell Bj?rklund, of the University of Oslo Natural History Museum, said in a statement.

While researchers don't think this particular incursion is the direct result of global warming, ocean scientists generally expect changes in ocean circulation to bring more southern water, and the organisms it contains, farther north.

For instance, warming is expected to weaken a current, the North Atlantic Polar Gyre, that prevents the Gulf Stream from penetrating farther north. Changing wind patterns and the influx of freshwater from melting sea ice and glaciers could also result in more southern water being drawn north, said Arnold Gordon, head of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory's division of ocean and climate physics at Columbia University, in a statement. Gordon was not involved in this research.

"When we suddenly find tropical plankton in the Arctic, the issue of global warming comes right up," study researcher O. Roger Anderson, a specialist in one-celled organisms at Lamont-Doherty, said in a statement. So, it's important to critically examine evidence that may explain observations like this one, Anderson said.?

A description of the radiolaria discovery appears in the July issue of the journal Micropaleontology.

Nano-FTIR - A new era in modern analytical chemistry

An ultimate goal in modern chemistry and materials science is the non-invasive chemical mapping of materials with nanometer scale resolution. A variety of high-resolution imaging techniques exist (e.g. electron microscopy or scanning probe microscopy), however, their chemical sensitivity cannot meet the demands of modern chemical nano-analytics. Optical spectroscopy, on the other hand, offers high chemical sensitivity but its resolution is limited by diffraction to about half the wavelength, thus preventing nanoscale resolved chemical mapping.

Nanoscale chemical identification and mapping of materials now becomes possible with nano-FTIR, an optical technique that combines scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. By illuminating the metalized tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM) with a broadband infrared laser, and analyzing the backscattered light with a specially designed Fourier Transform spectrometer, the researchers could demonstrate local infrared spectroscopy with a spatial resolution of less than 20 nm. "Nano-FTIR thus allows for fast and reliable chemical identification of virtually any infrared-active material on the nanometer scale", says Florian Huth, who performed the experiments.

An important aspect of enormous practical relevance is that the nano-FTIR spectra match extremely well with conventional FTIR spectra, while the spatial resolution is increased by more than a factor of 300 compared to conventional infrared spectroscopy. "The high sensitivity to chemical composition combined with ultra-high resolution makes nano-FTIR a unique tool for research, development and quality control in polymer chemistry, biomedicine and pharmaceutical industry" concludes Rainer Hillenbrand, leader of the Nanooptics group at nanoGUNE.

Fig. 1: Chemical identification of nanoscale sample contaminations with nano-FTIR. In the topography image (left), a small sample contaminant (B) can be found next to a thin film of PMMA (A) on a Si substrate (dark region). In the mechanical phase image (middle) the contrast already indicates that the particle consists of a different material than the film and the substrate. Comparing the nano-FTIR absorption spectra at the positions A and B (right panel) with standard IR databases reveals the chemical identity of the film and the particle. Each spectrum was taken in 7 minutes with a spectral resolution of 13 cm-1.

For example, nano-FTIR can be applied for the chemical identification of nanoscale sample contaminations. Fig. 1 shows AFM images of a PMMA film on a Si surface. While the AFM phase contrast indicates the presence of a 100 nm size contamination, the determination of its chemical identity remains elusive from these images. Using nano-FTIR to record a local infrared spectrum in the center of the particle and comparing it with standard FTIR database spectra, the contamination can be identified as a PDMS particle.

U.S. health advisers back two new eye treatments

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel on Thursday recommended two drugs for combating different forms of vision loss that can lead to blindness among a range of adults, including diabetics and the elderly.

The FDA advisory committee of outside experts gave its support to Swiss-based Roche Holding AG's Lucentis eye drug for treatment of diabetic macular edema and Belgium-based ThromboGenics' treatment for viteromacular adhesion, a condition that often develops with aging.

The recommendations will now be considered by FDA regulators as they decide whether to approve the two injectable drugs for sale in the United States.

The news emerged after the companies' shares had ended trading in Europe. Roche shares closed slightly higher at 168 Swiss francs, while ThromboGenics fell 4.82 percent to 23.30 euros.

The panel gave its blessing to both 0.3 milligram and 0.5 milligram doses of Roche's drug, known generically as ranibizumab, after reviewing clinical research showing it clearly helps diabetic patients who suffer from diabetic macular edema, or DME.

However, some panel members expressed concern about evidence linking higher doses of the drug to adverse events, including death.

Lucentis, which is made by Roche unit Genentech and administered by monthly injection, is already approved for two other eye ailments.

"The committee's recommendation is an important step towards improving the care of Americans with diabetic macular edema. If approved by the FDA, this will be the first major development for treating diabetic macular edema in more than 25 years," Genentech said in a statement.

The leading cause of vision loss among diabetics, DME occurs when leaking blood vessels in the eye cause swelling at the center of the retina. The result is a progressive blurring of images near the center of a patient's field of vision, and sometimes blindness.

About 75,000 new cases of DME are estimated to develop among Americans each year. Genentech says that about 560,000 in total are affected by the disease.

There are currently no FDA-approved drugs for DME. The condition is currently treated by laser surgery to stop blood vessels from leaking. The treatment can slow vision loss, but it rarely leads to vision improvement.

Lucentis is already approved to treat wet age-related macular degeneration - the leading cause of blindness among the elderly. It is also approved for macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO), a swelling or thickening of the part of the retina responsible for central vision.

If approved for DME, Lucentis will likely compete with a highly promising drug being tested by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc and Roche's own cancer drug, Avastin, which works in a similar manner as Lucentis.

Regeneron shares closed 5.3 percent higher at $135.64 on Nasdaq following the advisory panel's decision.

The same FDA committee later concluded that ThromboGenics' injectable drug, known generically as ocriplasmin, helped enough people in clinical trials to warrant a favorable review, despite evidence of adverse effects, including eye pain, swelling and blurred vision.

Several panel members recommended further studies to monitor safety and determine more fully the drug's effectiveness.

Vitreomacular adhesion often results from aging and can lead to visual impairment or blindness. But it currently can be treated only through surgery.

It occurs when vitreous gel detaches at the back of the eye but adheres to the retina as it pulls away, distorting vision and causing small breaks to develop in the macula, a portion of the retina that is important for central vision.

Ocriplasmin is ThromboGenics' main drug. The company has secured a deal to sell ocriplasmin in 40 countries outside the United States through Novartis AG's opthalmic division, Alcon.

ThromboGenics plans to market the product itself within the United States.

Tweet this: Study finds limits to new 'Twiplomacy'

(AP) ? Almost two-thirds of world leaders have joined the Twitterverse where President Barack Obama and his tweet on gay marriage are the most popular to date, says a new study Thursday.

But the rise in so-called "Twiplomacy" resembles something of an echo chamber, according to an analysis of 264 government accounts in 125 countries that the PR firm Burson-Marsteller describes as the first-ever global study of world leaders on Twitter.

Some 264 world leaders now have a Twitter account, and the researchers believe that 30 of them do their own tweeting. Altogether they have sent more than 350,000 tweets to almost 52 million followers, the study shows.

But about a third of them don't follow each other and dozens of them don't even follow any other Twitterers. But that doesn't mean they don't converse. More than nine of every 10 tweets by the Ugandan prime minister and the Rwandan president are replies, the study says.

World leaders tweet in 43 languages, with English favored by 90 of the accounts. Spanish is the next most-used, with 41 accounts, French is third with 25 accounts and Arabic fourth with 17 accounts.

"Sixteen of the G-20 leaders are actively using Twitter for public diplomacy, but it is sad to see that the heads of state and government in China, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Italy still have not joined the Twitterverse," said Matthias Luefkens of Burson-Marteller in Geneva. "What is really interesting is how the world is divided into English and Spanish tweets."

The data, gathered in July, looked at more than 30 variables such as tweets, retweets and hashtags. Luefkens said Twitter was not involved in any way in the study.

The most-followed account is (at)BarackObama, which is run by the Obama campaign and has 17.8 million followers. Of those followers 76 are the president's peers and other governments. Obama rarely sends his own tweets, but when he does he signs them, as he did in one to the first lady on Valentine's Day, Luefkens says.

A May 9 tweet sent by the campaign team quoting Obama as saying "same-sex couples should be able to get married" is the most re-tweeted to date ? more than 62,000 times.

Twitter is often used by politicians during election campaigns whose accounts go silent once they are elected, the study says, citing Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and French President Francois Hollande as examples.

BOOK LOG: Guess Who's Writing For Kids Now?

TV stars, members of the royal family, first ladies, and many other celebrities have added ?children?s author? to their resume?s. It must be important work or so many famous people wouldn?t be willing to pursue it when they are already successful in their own fields. And now, rabbits are writing. MR. AND MRS. BUNNY?DETECTIVES EXTRAORDINAIRE! By Mrs. Bunny, Translated from the Rabbit by Polly Horvath, illustrated by Sophie Blackall, Schwartz & Wade Books, 2012
I love this book! It?s a family read-aloud. Before you object that this would never take place in your family of different ages and stages (?What? You want us to read together a book about rabbits??), picture yourselves crammed into a stuffy motel room during a rainstorm at the beach. A desperate situation requires desperate measures. Try it. Read the first chapter or two aloud to your family, and see what happens. I?m writing?as fast as I can to nominate this hilarious mystery for your games and book bag.
Mr. and Mrs. Bunny find middle schooler Madeline sitting glumly in the middle of the road pondering her next move in order to find her missing parents. What luck! ?Mr. and Mrs. Bunny (?for so they are called,? Mr. Bunny says, often) have just decided to become detectives. A deal is struck and off they go. It?s during this exchange that Madeline realizes she is speaking Rabbit. This comes in handy as you might imagine.
Madeline?s hippie parents who want to be called Flo and Mildred instead of Mom and Dad have been kidnapped by foxes, led by the cruel and chilling titan of industry, the Grand Poobah. The Grand Poobah and fellow foxes learned about humans by studying TV sitcoms.? They speak English because they think humans are too stupid to learn how to speak Fox. After all, humans have not figured out who the owners of Fox Television really are. ????????????
The foxes want a code cracked and so does everyone else. The plot depends upon it. The most likely code cracker is Madeline?s loopy Uncle Runyan, but he slips into a coma on purpose because he says this always helps plots on TV.
Meanwhile, nurturing Mrs. Bunny thinks all human children are orphans because in the children?s books she reads, the parents have died. She doesn?t come right out and say this, but the reader will sense that Mrs. Bunny would adopt Madeline if she could. Problem: Madeline doesn?t fit inside their lovely hutch with light blue shutters and a light blue door. Even so, Mrs. Bunny finds that advising a young teen is not quite the same as raising rabbit children.
Parents will laugh out loud at the human interactions between Mr. and Mrs. Bunny.? (Has someone bugged our kitchens and listened in on us?) Paragraph after paragraph has a subtle underlying meaning for someone. Can you imagine what message this sends to children when they see their parents enjoying a book that belongs to kids? Reading is more than fundamental. Reading is fun. Obviously, it takes a talented writer to master the art of translating from the Rabbit. Polly Horvath, has done this well. She?s already a National Book Award winner (The Canning Season), and her book Everything On a Waffle, won a Newbery Honor. Illustrator Sophie Blackall,??is no stranger to honors, either, having illustrated the Golden Kite winner, The Big Red Lollipop by Rukhsana Khan. Surely, she speaks Rabbit body language (along with Fox, Marmot, and English.) Marmot? You?ll have to read Mrs. Bunny?s account. Be glad Polly Horvath made this book available to the rest of us.? ??

Oh?and you don?t have to wait for a rainy day at the beach. Read this rib-tickling?story on your own. Family members and co-workers will hear you laughing out loud. Of course, they?ll ask why. Before you know it, Mrs. Bunny?s debut novel will be a best seller.

Athletes urged to think twice before they tweet

LONDON (Reuters) - Athletes racing to share their views with fans at the London Olympics may think twice before hitting send following the first expulsion of an athlete for a racist Twitter remark.

Greek triple jumper Paraskevi Papachristou was withdrawn from the London Olympics on Wednesday after causing an uproar in her home nation for a tweet about West Nile mosquitoes and the number of Africans in Greece.

Her expulsion was expected to act as a warning to other athletes who, along with Olympic organizers, are trying to find the best way to harness the power of social media that has exploded since the 2008 Beijing Games.

"The fact that this has happened will make other athletes feel more cautious about what they put out there," said Rebecca Hopkins, managing director of sports PR agency ENS Ltd that handles crisis media management.

"It is always very difficult to impose a limit on freedom of speech but the IOC (International Olympic Committee) has set down the guidelines and the athletes have to comply."

The explosion of social media in the past four years has created a new challenge for the IOC and for the National Olympic Committees who could previously resolve any indiscretions away from the public eye.

Since the Beijing Olympics, the number of Facebook users has surged to 900 million from 100 million and Twitter has 140 million users having only just emerged in 2008.

Aware that athletes and their fans are prolific users of social media, the IOC said competitors at the London Games may post, blog and tweet -- but within guidelines.

NO-TWEET LIST

Competitors may write "first-person, diary-type" entries but should not act as reporters, and social media activity must respect the Olympic Charter which condemns any discrimination. Vulgar or obscene words or images were also ruled out.

Postings deemed to be for commercial or advertising purposes were also on the no-go list.

The IOC made it clear that the accreditations of "any organization or person ... may be withdrawn without notice" if its guidelines are breached and most athletes were aware of the rules.

"The thing is you have to be careful with the social media side of things -- certainly the decision to tweet or not tweet, and certainly what you say," said British badminton player, Imogen Bankier.

The sports world has seen a fair number of social media abuses in recent years particularly among soccer players.

The English Football Association and New Zealand rugby board responded by banning their players from using social media during recent football and rugby union World Cups.

So far only a handful of Olympians have landed in hot water.

Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice lost a lucrative endorsement deal with Jaguar two years ago after tweeting a comment seen as homophobic.

Australian swimmers Nick D'Arcy and Kenrick Monk have been banned from using social media in London by the Australian Olympic Committee after posting a photo of themselves brandishing guns on Facebook while training in the United States.

They have also been ordered to return home immediately after the completion of their events at London.

Athletes said Wednesday's expulsion would be a wake-up call but would not stop athletes form using social media at the Olympics.

"Most of us I think are pretty good about it, and I've seen a lot of people in the sports community use it pretty wisely," said Chas Betts, a U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler.

"I think it can be very beneficial, you know, updates and things ... so for the most part I think it's a good thing."
