HBT: Livan Hernandez signs with Braves

UPDATE: Surprisingly enough, it didn?t take Hernandez long to find another gig. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that he?s signing with the Braves, who for some reason prefer the 37-year-old soft-tosser to their various inexperienced prospects. Good thing Calcaterra is on vacation today.

==========

Once thought to be a near-lock for the Astros? rotation, Livan Hernandez was released today.

Hernandez signed a minor-league deal in late January and looked likely to eat some innings for an otherwise inexperienced pitching staff, but the 37-year-old right-hander got knocked around this spring and the Astros decided to give opportunities to Jordan Lyles and Kyle Weiland instead.

Hernandez was surprisingly effective for the Nationals in 2010, but allowed opponents to hit .291 off him last season while posting a 4.47 ERA in 175 innings. He struck out just 5.1 batters per nine innings and averaged 83.9 miles per hour with his fastball, so if Hernandez couldn?t crack what figures to be one of the worst rotations in baseball he may finally be finished.

Of course, I?ve said that before.

Gingrich says Romney 'is clearly the front-runner'

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich is acknowledging what has become increasingly clear: Mitt Romney is the likely GOP presidential nominee.

The former House speaker told Milwaukee radio station WTMJ Friday he thinks Romney "is clearly the front-runner." Gingrich said Romney "will probably" get the 1,144 convention delegates he needs to win the nomination, but added that Romney still has to earn it.

Gingrich has refused to leave the race. He said earlier this week that he would continue to campaign until Romney gets those delegates.

Gingrich's comments Friday were a turnaround from what he said after Romney's third-place finish in the GOP primaries in Alabama and Mississippi on March 13. Gingrich said then: "If you're the front-runner and you keep coming in third, you're not much of a front-runner."

Afghan massacre: Bales case echoes for vets on hotline

Combat veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts share their experiences with PTSD, and their reaction to reports that Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales allegedly gunned down 17 Afghan civilians. Msnbc.com's Kari Huus reports.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

LOS ANGELES ? The young men who answer the phones at the National Veterans Foundation's?hotline for troubled veterans speak with an authority that comes from having faced down the same demons that plague their callers.

All are combat veterans, having served up to four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, and all have struggled with either PTSD or traumatic brain injury ? the signature wounds of these conflicts ? or both.

For them, the story of Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, accused of murdering 17 Afghan civilians during his fourth combat deployment, triggers mixed emotions ? horror over the senseless rampage but also empathy for a soldier who, in their view, apparently was pushed beyond?the breaking point.?But their more immediate concern is the impact it may have on the troubled voices on the other end of the phone lines they answer each day.

"One of the biggest issues we have ? is the vets don?t get the jobs," said Apolonio Munoz III, 28, an Army veteran deployed during the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 who works for the hotline while pursuing a social work degree. "[Employers] think they are whack-jobs and they?re all going to be cold-blooded killers, they?re going to come in and shoot up the place, which is not the situation."

Munoz and several other former soldiers who answer the hotline agreed to share with msnbc.com their thoughts on PTSD, the stresses of war and the news that Bales ? a 38-year-old soldier with a clean military record ? allegedly crept into an Afghan village at night on March 11 and slaughtered Afghan civilians, including women and children.

Their comments will likely presage parts of Bales' trial, in which the cumulative effects of combat deployments and the degree to which PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injury) can be linked to violence will almost certainly play a role.

Bales, who has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder along with other charges, suffered a brain injury in Iraq but was not diagnosed as suffering from PTSD. His defense is expected to argue, however, that he suffered "diminished capacity" as a result of the injury and possibly undiagnosed PTSD. Bales, who is being held in detention at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, has not yet entered a plea to the charges, but his civilian defense attorney, John Henry Browne, has indicated he expects to mount a vigorous defense based in part on his client?s mental state.

How staff Sgt. Bales lawyers are fighting for his life

Many experts also expect the defense to produce expert witnesses to testify about the effects on mental health of repeat combat deployments. But just as with PTSD and TBI, the record is incomplete, as the Iraq and Afghan conflicts mark the first time the U.S. has cycled soldiers in and out of combat so many times.

The latter issue resonates loudly with the former soldiers who answer the hot line.

"It?s an absolute tragedy, and it never should have happened," Cameron White, 31, who served two tours of duty in Iraq with the Marines before leaving the military and becoming a college student and anti-war activist, said of the massacre in Kandahar province. He said he believes the killing were "a byproduct of a failed policy that continues to put traumatized troops out on the battlefield when they shouldn?t be there."

'Yes, I killed Iraqis'
White said that his experiences in Iraq led him to believe that not even the most hardened soldier is immune to meltdown amid the repeated stresses of combat.

James Cheng / msnbc.com

Left to right, Rich Rudnick, Wendell Guillermo and Apolonio E. Mu?oz III work at the National Veterans Foundation in Los Angeles.

"I think when you say ? 'that?s not me' or ?that would never happen to me,' I think anybody that says that is just lying to themselves," he said. "? Something like that could happen to any one of us."

Another hot line operator, Freddy Cordova, 29, who served four tours in Iraq from 2003 to 2008, said the mental health evaluations he received between deployments were cursory at best.

In an evaluation after his first deployment, Cordova said he answered 'yes' to most of the combat-related questions: "Yes, I saw dead people. Yes, I saw dead Americans. Yes, I fired my weapon. Yes, I killed Iraqis. Yes, I killed the enemy."?

"I didn?t report that I was a threat to others, but I put that I would like to speak to somebody," he said. "What did the Army turn around to do? They just overlook it. Four months later, I?m in Iraq again."

Floyd "Shad" Meshad, founder and president of the National Veterans Foundation and a psychiatric social worker with 40 years' experience working with combat veterans, said he has repeatedly seen the effects to overexposure to the horrors of war.

"We know that soldiers, when they have seen too much combat, they will either implode ? in suicide ? or explode," he said. "The military just continues to send people back into combat like they were rifles, just kind of cleans them up and sends them back in. ? I don?t want to say that everybody flips out like this, but a significant number do."

James Cheng / msnbc.com

Floyd 'Shad' Meshad, founder and president of the nonprofit National Veterans Foundation.

Meshad started his career as an Army mental health officer in Vietnam and was instrumental in developing a national network of community-based Veteran Centers, offering counseling, referrals and readjustment assistance, beginning in the 1970s. He has served as an expert witness in about a dozen trials for veterans facing the death penalty, he said, and appeared in court for hundreds of others facing?lesser charges.

When?Bales was identified as the suspect in the Afghan killings, Meshad rushed the soldier's?defense team an advance copy of a new book published by NVF, "Attorney's Guide to Defending Veterans in Criminal Court."

But he said he fears that politics -- including the need to appease the Afghan government -- may outweigh the role of mental health factors in the court's ruling on the Afghanistan slayings.

"They are going to cook Bales," he predicted.

But even the mention of PTSD and Bales in the same sentence worries Matthew Friedman, executive director of the National Center for PTSD under the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

"It will be a terrible thing if people with PTSD were painted with a Sgt. Bales paintbrush. It?s just not appropriate," said Friedman, who has been involved in research and treatment of PTSD for 35 years and is also a professor of psychiatry, toxicology and pharmacology at Dartmouth Medical School. "There is evidence that some people with PTSD may exhibit irritable or aggressive behavior at times. There?s no evidence that this kind of indiscriminate violence is a symptom of PTSD."

And he said that Bales? history before joining the military ? which included financial fraud and an assault case in Washington state ? signaled that he was a troubled individual.

Referrals and suicide intervention
The veterans working the NVF hot line have what most experts consider textbook cases of PTSD. They have struggled with anxiety, anger and hyper-vigilance brought home from the combat zone. For some, visiting a shopping mall is a daunting experience, as they find themselves constantly scanning for potential threats. Even as these men recover and pursue civilian jobs and studies, some yell in their sleep, dream about explosions or are startled by?loud noises or a glimpse of trash along the road that looks like an IED.

Most of the time, experts say, the damage from repeated exposure to combat plays out in insidious ways. It contributes to divorce and substance abuse, and takes a toll on the mental health of children. According to the Center for New American Security, 18 vets commit suicide every day.

The NVF hotline has been fielding between 11,000 and 12,000 calls a year over the last several years. Four or five a month come from veterans, or even soldiers still in service, who are dangerously depressed and threatening suicide, Meshad said.

Most others are from frustrated veterans and family members who need help navigating the complex VA benefits process, in need of legal assistance, substance abuse treatment or job training. NVF employees pride themselves in walking them?through every step,?and then following through if they encounter problems.

Each week, NVF staff does rounds in a van to check in on homeless veterans ? mostly older Vietnam era veterans who tend to cluster together in encampments after losing jobs and families to mental illness and addiction.

To these young veterans serving at NVF, the weekly workload highlights the need for more attention to the mental health of soldiers. In the case of the massacre in Afghanistan, they suggest, responsibility for that mental health lies with more than one individual.

"My reaction to Sergeant Bales ? was shock," said Jose Castro, an Army veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan. "But, you know, when certain things are ignored about an individual soldier? and people are ? forced into situations that that aren?t healthy ? (that) ultimately can lead to something like this. It?s bound to happen."

"What do you expect for a guy who?s been deployed four times? Losing buddies, getting hurt, being in firefights and so forth," agreed Army veteran Wendell Guillermo, 26.? "And whether or not the military wants to acknowledge it? ? there is a breaking point."

blake - Spirituality ? The Bridge In Between Dogma And Atheism ...

Does ?spirituality? bridge the hole in between spiritual dogma and atheism? Is it the golden point out in between an all strong dictatorial tremendous presently being that creates very good and evil, demands sacrifice and unquestioning obedience and the fully mechanistic perception of the atheist? Can the 2 even be reconciled?

We are all acquainted with non secular dogma. The Judeo-Christian, Islamic traditions have dominated spiritual thought for thousands of years. At the core of all 3 is a brilliant deity that calls for worship, punishes the unfaithful, and has no situation with each declaring the other as inferior and even evil. A single has savior who died for their sins; a single has a savior however to come; and the opposite says stay a life by the principles and you may be rewarded later. There is a customary assumption in these religions that people are sinners and are doomed to everlasting punishment by an all loving god. All fairly foolish. It might be simple to extol the absurdity of most religions. And, it is simple to see how a rational, contemplating man or lady would have concerns with spiritual hypocrisy and their history of blood and violence.

On the other aspect of the coin, we?ve got atheism. Typically, atheists don?t think about in a god or gods, shun any notion of the supernatural and place their faith in goal, science, humanism and rationality. Basically, atheism signifies, ?with out god.? However, are the options solely god (s) and no gods?

The answer is that there is a totally different alternative; spirituality. Yes, there?s a big distinction among presently being spiritual and spiritual. It?s critical to state that spirituality has been throughout lengthier than any religion; it?s as aged as humanity. Rooted in historic mysticism from Chaldea, Egypt and found in every civilization, spirituality was centered within the notion of gnosis, figuring out. For spirituality, there isn?t a set doctrine, no dogma and no institution striving for self-perpetuation. Spirituality is a idea, a perception based upon personal enlightenment. What is thrilling is that even despite the fact that spirituality is based totally upon individual epiphany, it consists of a frequent thread that can be identified in the mystical teachings of all cultures; it has a universal commonality (perhaps Jung is at perform proper here).

In analyzing the literature of mystical teachings, which all as effectively normally grew to turn into perverted into religions, ?some? of the widespread threads include: a perception in an all pervasive common intelligence; all factors are alive; all points are related, really; common intelligence thinks the manifest world into existence and all bigger levels of consciousness play an ongoing component in this development; actuality is an phantasm and is totally different from actuality; we are what we assume; there isn?t any these sorts of matter as great and evil warring for humanity?s soul; there isn?t a dying; way of life regularly seeks to precise by itself and evolves into increased ranges of consciousness; there is no such thing as a deity demanding servitude and no deity that condemns, tortures or punishes; all that ever was, is and will likely be, is here, now; while there are balancing forces within the universes, these forces are nether superior or unfavorable; expertise is attainable by way of instinct and meditation; the universe is generally goal; all components transfer in cycles that spiral ever upward; and all issues are possible. Regardless of these and other shared concepts, there is no church primarily based upon these rules. There are groups, orders, brotherhoods and societies which have shaped to educate these concepts, but none hunt down to dominate, condemn, proselytize, or warfare with other individuals about ideology.

Considerably of what?s believed, or considerably identified, by those that have embarked upon a religious path is, oddly sufficient, primarily based in science and reasoning. Is that this the bridge between dogma and atheism? It may well be. Lots of scientists have expounded mystical/religious tips. Galileo, Newton, Descartes, and Einstein had distinct non secular views on the character of the universe. And proper now, the breakthroughs and discoveries in quantum physics are heading instantly down the religious route. The circle is closing. From speedy data, to skepticism, to discovery and back; scientific considered is revealing as right, what mystics taught in historic instances.

So what did individuals like Heisenberg and Bohr and different folks say in regards to the universe. The initially tenet is that the supplies-objective universe isn?t true, it?s an illusion. The ideas brings actuality into existence by means of observation. Genuinely, the universe is an interconnected sea of vitality that solely can tackle substance when it?s noticed. The subjective mind brings the goal mind into what we name reality, and however, it has no impartial existence; the observer and the seen are one particular. Quantum physics tells us that electrons may be in two locations at once and that they are waves of power that only get on bodily existence after we seem for them. Primarily, the material planet has no elementary existence. Until we low value quantum physics as ?hum bug,? we have now science telling us that people who base their actuality on the senses are gravely in error. There?s considerable investigation and analysis on this topic and if would behoove a seeker to Google the matter, ?mysticism and quantum physics.? This is not meant to be an in depth look at of the matter, but relatively a piece that raises the query for different people to ponder.

If the brain brings actuality into existence, the query that must be answered is what thoughts introduced the first matter,? accident insurance electrons, atoms, molecules, planets, suns and galaxies into existence? Does quantum physics ascribe this to deity? I consider that the answer is, ?not yet?, however it?s the logical conclusion. Quantum physics dismisses the notion that our actuality is the consequence of risk; that existence was a lark that emerged from some kind of chemical soup; and, that we are the whim of pure forces which are beyond our handle. The ability of imagined as ?the? stress that shapes our globe is rising if efficacy. We have now witnessed the facility of the ideas to get well, and that ideas do, certainly, generate our lives and the way in which we reside it. We all know now that every one factors are power. Concepts are also vitality that shapes the observable planet. Vitality can?t be destroyed. The underlying energy that varieties the basis of the universe is neutral; meaning, it is neither excellent nor poor, it simply is. Time can also be an illusion and that it might even be achievable to travel into the past or observe the long run. Does this not sound like, ?all that ever was, is and can be? is right right here now?

Though it?s uncomplicated to grasp the pattern in the denial of a brilliant at the moment being in a white gown and beard calling the images within the universe, it must also be simple to grasp that science is bringing us nearer to the notion that there is one factor, some type of increased consciousness, that?s developing and exploring the infinite potential of lifestyle. It really must also be distinct that considering that we, as individuals, have the electrical power to alter actuality, there is almost certainly a factor that transcends our consciousness, one thing that, possibly, we specific in our ever day lives. The mystics are fond of the phrase, ?as above, so beneath and as beneath, so over.? Simply, the microcosm, the small, is solely an expression of the macrocosm, the large. The atom and the galaxy are a person, and what?s right of a single, is real of the other.

Possibly atheists who genuinely observe the rising understanding in science will come across solace that their rational pondering has really verified the notion that consciousness is the guiding drive of the manifest universe. They are correct, in my brain, that there isn?t a single deity making day- to-day decisions about salvation, or what it?ll do subsequent to change the supplies earth. There is no such thing as a deity(ies) to be worshiped or that demand sacrifice. The query is, are they ready to fully grasp that deity is the All and that proper right here truly isn?t any put the place deity begins or ends. It?s the sea of possible wave power, of which we are all a portion, ready to co-develop the upcoming chapter in evolution.

I like synchronicity. When I completed this report I obtained an fascinating email. In it, it talked of the operates of Hawking, Bekenstein, Susskind and Maldacena. It?s premise was that, ?The materialistic paradigm is ineffective and buried.? It went on to talk concerning the Holographic Principle as described in Michael Talbot?s guide and within the introduction to the information it says, ?Set another means, there is proof to advise that our whole world and every little factor in it ? from snowflakes to maple timber to falling stars and spinning electrons ? are also solely ghostly photographs, projections from a stage of reality so past our very personal it?s virtually past the two space and time.? Once more, the question is begged, who or what tasks the Universe? As we transfer to a brand new 2012 paradigm, it?s distinct that the premise of the ?previous world? is collapsing. We are accustomed to the videos that place forth the notion that magic died in historic days simply because men and women stopped believing in it. Now we?re seeing that purchaser economics, earlier religious dogma and the materialistic concept of society are passing simply because, no a single believes it any more. The energy of the Universal head and all of its expressions, us incorporated, is producing a new reality; one explicit that finds the ?golden mean? involving the extremes. This strategy may well appear chaotic. Witness worldwide climate alter, political disruptions, non secular strife, sicknesses and what some are erroneously labeling the ?finish instances.? Ye of minor faith! From this chaos will emerge a new actuality, a new stability and a brand new harmony and new reconciliation. Spirituality ? The Bridge In between Dogma and Atheism

(AP) ? Techno music rocked the stadium during a changeover, then faded, the din replaced by the crowd's cheers as Andy Roddick took his position at the baseline, one game from a win over nemesis Roger Federer.

Roddick held the balls, and that was the edge he needed. He served out the match to win 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-4 Monday night in the third round at the Sony Ericsson Open.

With that, the fans roared again, saluting only the third victory for Roddick in 24 meetings with Federer.

"There is no script in sports, you know. I think that's what makes it the best entertainment in the world," Roddick said. "Nights like tonight are why you play the matches. You don't know what's going to happen."

On paper, it looked like a mismatch between former No. 1s, each a two-time champion in the event. The third-ranked Federer began the night 40-2 since the U.S. Open, while Roddick's ranking had slipped to 34th, his lowest point since 2001.

But Roddick's serve kept him in the match, and then won it. He broke only once but held every service game in the first and last sets.

After falling behind 15-30 in the final game, he closed out the victory with an ace and two service winners, all at more than 130 mph. That ended Federer's streak of 77 consecutive wins against players outside the top 20.

"I feel like I lost against a former No. 1, not that I lost against a guy ranked 30 in the world," Federer said. "I'm happy to see Andy play really well. He's a great champion, and enjoy him while you have him. It was a great night for him and America's tennis."

Also dominating with the serve were Serena and Venus Williams, who both reached the quarterfinals.

Serena matched a career high with 20 aces to beat Samantha Stosur 7-5, 6-3.

"My serve was hot," Williams said. "I was like, 'That's pretty cool.'"

She avenged a loss to Stosur when they last met in the U.S. Open final in September.

"That wasn't in my mind," Williams said. "I just thought, 'This is a new game.'"

Older sister Venus won her third consecutive three-set match, hitting 13 aces as she outlasted No. 15-seeded Ana Ivanovic 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2. Williams is playing in her first tournament since withdrawing from the U.S. Open last August after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

"I come out on court knowing I can play well, but almost with no expectations," Williams said.

Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka lost 10 of the first 11 games, then rallied to remain unbeaten this year by beating No. 16-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 1-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5. Azarenka was two points from defeat five times, but swept the last three games and extended her winning streak to 26 matches, all in 2012.

"I'm proud of the way I fought," she said. "With my game I don't think I'm really pleased, but it doesn't really matter. The most important is that I found the resources."

Also reaching the quarterfinals was No. 2 Maria Sharapova, who overcame 11 double-faults to beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 7-6 (3). Sharapova won despite committing 52 unforced errors and losing her serve four times.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round by beating No. 27-seeded Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-4. Djokovic is bidding for his third Key Biscayne title and second in a row.

No. 8-seeded Mardy Fish assured he'll remain the top-ranked American man by beating No. 28 Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-3.

Federer lost only seven points on his serve in the opening set, but when he failed to put away an overhead trailing 4-3 in the tiebreaker, the match swung Roddick's way.

Federer squandered another chance with a 1-0 lead in the third set, failing to convert four break points in the next game. After Roddick escaped for 1-all, he earned his lone break in the next game, his grunts filling the stadium as he cracked four forehand winners.

"One of the best return games I ever played," Roddick said.

"It was a big turn of events there in five minutes," Federer said. "That's how tennis goes sometimes."

Roddick served out the final four games without facing a break point. When he let loose a 134-mph serve to win the final point, he raised his arms and waved his racket at the heavens.

He was thinking of his agent, Miamian Ken Meyerson, who died in October.

"I felt like I was a crazy person because I think I was having full dialogues with him the last 30 minutes of the match," Roddick said. "I was just letting him know that I heard him."

Roddick had reason to look for assistance from above: He had lost 52 of 64 sets against Federer entering the match. Federer had won six meetings in a row since Roddick beat him in the Key Biscayne quarterfinals in 2008.

Apple patents ejectable SIM card tray as nano-SIM battle rages on

Image
We're guessing it's just coincidental timing here, but it looks as if Apple has been granted a patent surrounding "ejectable component assemblies" that are designed to be "flush with the external surfaces of the housings of the devices, despite variations in their manufacture." In other words, a SIM card tray. Granted, there's no specific verbiage in the independent claims of this one letting us know what exact size we're talking about, so it's highly unlikely that a patent application filed in December of 2010 (but granted today) would be directly referencing the nano-SIM war that's currently ongoing. That said, the description most certainly sounds like the tray that we've seen throughout the iPhone's life cycle, and if Apple's trying to go small in future handsets, there's a better than average chance that the ejection mechanism will be all too familiar. Legalese lovers can find the usual load down in the source link.

Top-Flight Commercial Real Estate Tips And Suggestions | welcome ...

If you?re reading this article, chances are you?re either a property owner or a freshly-minted real estate agent. In either circumstance, you?re about to learn just how different it is to buy and sell commercial rather than residential properties. Use the following tips to help you gain an advantage in the commercial market.

When renting a piece of commercial real estate doing business in France , it is important for you to thoroughly read the rental agreement. You will want to make sure that you are not responsible for any repairs that the building needs. If anything goes wrong, you should contact the owner to make sure to get it fixed as soon as the problem is noticed, so that no major damage is caused.

Be careful when you are purchasing a property and make sure that it does not have any hazardous waste problems. When commercial properties have this type of problems it becomes the responsibility of the owner to handle it even if they were not the ones that caused the problem.

Find other commercial real estate investors in your area to learn from and ask them questions. You may even find local associations that have meetings and key note speakers who are an excellent way to get information that will help you in your own area. It is also a great way to network with your peers!

Try to make appointments to see a few of the properties that you are interested in on the same day in a very close time range. This is a good idea because you will be able to make a good comparison of all of the properties while everything you saw is still fresh in your mind.

If you want to rent your apartments or offices at a good price, think about hiring an interior decorator. A good decorator will create a warm environment that makes renters feel at home even if they are renting a rather small and conventional apartment. This could boost the value of your property.

One important tip to remember when investing in commercial real estate investing in United Kingdom is that you need to approach it differently in every aspect than residential real estate. This is important to know ahead of time because you will need a much higher down payment ratio, and you also need to find out which lenders will cater to your particular situation. One aspect that is safer than residential real estate is the fact that your own personal credit will not suffer if there are negative unforeseen circumstances that cause the deal to end prematurely.

Using the information that you have learned from this article, you should find that getting started in the real estate market, is not quite as difficult as it may seem at first. You will also find that there are some great opportunities out there, if you just know how to find them.

New look-alike species may muddy the water for an endangered hammerhead

Identity confusion between a new, yet unnamed shark species, originally discovered off the eastern United States by Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center (NSU-OC) researchers, and its look-alike cousinthe endangered scalloped hammerhead sharkmay threaten the survival of both species.

According to an April 2012 article in the scientific journal Marine Biology, the new look-alike hammerhead species has now been discovered more than 4,300 miles away near the coast of southern Brazil. This confirms that the original finding was not a local oddity and the new species is much wider spread. The look-alike species may face the same fishery pressures as the real scalloped hammerhead, which is being fished unsustainably for its highly prized fins.

"It's a classic case of long-standing species misidentification that not only casts further uncertainty on the status of the real scalloped hammerhead but also raises concerns about the population status of this new species," says professor Mahmood Shivji, Ph.D., who oversaw the new research at the NSU-OC's Save Our Seas Shark Center USA and Guy Harvey Research Institute.

Tens of millions of sharks are being killed for their fins and meat worldwide, resulting in dramatic reductions in shark populations and concerns about the broad scale negative impacts to ocean ecosystems. This has prompted international protection and other management efforts to reduce the unsustainable slaughter of sharks.

"It's very important to officially recognize, name and learn more about this new hammerhead species and the condition of its populations through systematic surveys," Shivji says. "Without management intervention to curtail its inadvertent killing, we run the risk that overfishing could eradicate an entire shark species before its existence is even properly acknowledged."

Shivji's team first discovered the new hammerhead species in 2005 when examining the DNA of sharks thought to be scalloped hammerheads based on their physical appearance. A research team from the University of South Carolina independently confirmed the existence of the new species in 2006.

Combining genetic assessments of NSU and South Carolina researchers shows that at least 7 percent of the sharks in U.S. waters originally thought to be scalloped hammerheads turned out to be the new species. This means that the population of the endangered real scalloped hammerhead in U.S. waters is probably smaller than originally thought.

The status of the scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) is currently under review by the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service to determine if it warrants listing as threatened or endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. It's already on the red list of endangered species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The new species is on neither list.

"We hope that during this important scalloped hammerhead status review, the new look-alike species will be recognized, and possible impacts of historical mix-ups between the two species on past scalloped hammerhead stock assessments will be considered," says Shivji.

According to Danillo Pinhal, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the UNESP-So Paulo State University in Brazil who performed the lab work as a visiting graduate student in Shivji's laboratory in 2009, "the finding of this species all the way down in Brazilian waters, where hammerhead sharks are heavily fished, raises concerns about the population status of both species not just in U.S. waters but throughout the western Atlantic. It's an international issue now and it's essential that further research on this new species be conducted in Brazilian waters."

Other than differences in their DNA, the two shark species also differ in their number of vertebrae. The new look-alike species has approximately 20 fewer vertebrae than the scalloped hammerhead, in the range of 170 vs. 190. An analysis of the DNA suggests that the new species and the scalloped hammerhead separated from each other approximately 4.5 million years ago, a surprisingly long time given how similar they look externally.

There are three well-documented species of large hammerhead sharks (scalloped, great and smooth hammerheads), and their fins have high value in the international shark fin trade. The finding of this new hammerhead now brings the total to four large species with this unique hammerhead shape.

Hammerheads and other large sharks have been overfished for years. Scientists are concerned that further reductions in their numbers and biodiversity may irreversibly alter the ocean's intricate food web and upset ecosystem balance. For example, a high-profile study has shown that the large reduction of sharks off the U.S. East Coast is associated with a huge increase in the population of one of their prey --- the cownose ray --- which in turn has then been responsible for overeating the bay scallop, dramatically reducing the supply of scallops for the fishing industry.

Mansfield Property Management ? Things To Look For In A Real ...

Article by Robert Preaudx

Many a times the only difference between a good and bad real estate deal is the real estate agent himself. If you are someone planning to buy or sell your home, here are a few things that you need to know, before you choose a real estate agent. The real estate market is today crowded with many agents, who promise the skies, but not many are able to deliver what they promise. Make sure that the real estate agent has enough experience and knowledge about the market trends. Most of the real estate agents skill comes from, on the job experience and hence give a lot of importance to experience. You could also ask for referrals from your family and friends. You could also source for real estate agents from the internet.Another very important thing to know is the real estate agent?s average ratio. A good real estate agent should have considerable experience in lowering the listed price when it comes to buying a home, and negotiating deals close to the listed prices when it comes to selling.Once you have chosen an agent, ask him about his USP. What makes him different from the other real estate agents? If you are buyer, you could ask him, about the number of houses, you are most likely to see, and who would be present the offer etc. If you are a seller, you could ask about the strategies that the agent would apply in selling the house. How and where does the real estate agent advertise? How many houses has the real estate agent sold, in your area? Make sure you reference a list of different real estate agents and brokers in the area using an online resource like KCMetro.com to find homes in the Kansas City Real Estate area along with homes shortly outside of the metro like Lawrence Kansas homes for sale as well. Also ask for references. Although this isn?t a very good method to know about the agent, when you speak to the references, ask about the positive and the negative aspects of the real estate agent.Be very careful about the sweet talk of the agents. When it comes to glib talking, there isn?t a better professional than a real estate agent. Be very clear of what you are signing when listing your property with the real estate agent. Also ask about the terms of cancellation in case you are not satisfied. Most agents require you to be listed for a minimum of six months exclusively with them, ask if there are charges for doing so. Also check for the real estate agents track record when it comes to selling or buying property.Once you have the answers to these questions, you could compare between the different agents and choose the one best for your property. The above mentioned are simply pointers, on the basis of which you could choose a good real estate agent.

If you are looking in the Johnson County, Overland Park Real Estate, Lenexa homes for sale or Kansas City metro area, finding a real estate partner is made simpler and much user friendly by the author of this article in their reputable online business directory at KCMetro.com
