Matt Garza Primer: Getting to Know the Newest Texas Ranger

Matt Garza is the newest addition to the Texas Rangers, as the trade deadline looms. The former Chicago Cubs starting pitcher was traded to the Rangers on July 22 and has already made one start, getting the win over the New York Yankees.

Garza, 29, is currently 7-1 with a 2.87 ERA, following his July 24 start. The Rangers are Garza's fourth team since making his MLB debut.

Here's more on Garza.

Full name: Matthew "Matt" Scott Garza

Date of birth: November 26, 1983

Birthplace: Selma, CA

Height and weight: 6'4", 215 lbs.

Throws: right

College: Fresno State

Check out Garza's career highlights in the video above. Garza is a power pitcher, and you'll notice he'll run his fastball up to 95 MPH.

Garza was the 25th overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft, selected by the Minnesota Twins. Garza spent little time in the minor leagues. Barry Horn of the The Dallas Morning News discusses Garza's rise the best.

Garza began the 2006 season with the Twins? Class-A affiliate. In a matter of months, he whisked through Class 2A and 3A as well. On Aug. 8, the Twins, thirsting for pitching help on their successful run to the American League Central Division title, made the 22-year-old a major leaguer.

Garza ended up with three wins and six losses after his first season in the big leagues. He spent one more season with the Twins before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays.

In July of 2010, Garza threw a no-hitter at home against the Detroit Tigers. Garza walked one batter and recorded six strikeouts. Check out Garza's last pitch in the game, where he gets Ramon Santiago to fly out to right field to end it. That pitching performance and the five runs to go along with it are what Rangers fans are thirsting for.

Garza was then traded to the Chicago Cubs before the start of the next season. In two-and-a-half seasons with the Cubs, Garza recorded 21 wins and 18 losses. He also had a career-best 197 strikeouts at the end of the 2011 season.

Garza has the chance to be a solid No. 2 starter for the Rangers. Gerry Fraley of The Dallas Morning News?put together a scouting report on Garza.

According to two major-league scouts, Garza is power pitcher who features the two- and four-seam fastball, slider and curveball. Uses curveball as off-speed pitch in place of changeup. Slider is a top-quality out pitch but can also put away hitters with riding four-seam fastball. ? Will challenge hitters by working insider with four-seamer. ? Ultra-competitive and sometimes lets emotions go unchecked.

The Rangers will need all 6'4" of Garza to compete and shut down teams as the season goes on. The Rangers are struggling with hitting as of late. Hopefully, brilliant performances by Garza can help spark the Rangers offense.

Garza is expected to make his second start for the Rangers against the Los Angeles Angels on July 29.

GLENDALE, Arizona ? Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has worked with some pretty good quarterbacks in his coaching career ? Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck.

Now, with Arians at age 60 in his first full season as an NFL head coach, his quarterback is 33-year-old Carson Palmer.

"Like I told him," Arians said on Saturday, Day 2 of the Cardinals' training camp, "this is a cowboy movie with two old guys, this is our last rodeo in the desert."

Palmer has arrived highly motivated. At this stage of his career, he's not interested in a long rebuilding project. It's about winning now, he said. No matter what it will have to come in the NFC West, arguably the toughest division in the league.

While there is much work to do, he said, he senses the same sentiment among his teammates.

"The one good thing you look at is that guys are flying around, guys are excited to be out there, guys are excited to get going," Palmer said. "There's not the attitude of 'Let's get through camp,' there's an attitude of 'Let's get better.'"

Palmer is entering his 13th NFL season, his 6-foot-5, 235-pound frame battered in his years with the Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders. The Cardinals, in dire need of a quarterback after a disastrous 2012 season, sent only a sixth-round draft pick to Oakland to get Palmer, then signed him to a two-year, $16 million contract.

Last year, Palmer had the third 4,000-yard passing season of his career, but the Raiders were usually trying to come from behind, limping to a 4-12 record. It was clear Palmer's two-year stay there was over. Arizona loomed as probably the final destination in a career with big numbers not a lot of success in terms of wins and losses. In 122 career starts, Palmer is 54-68.

In yet another training camp, Palmer said it's back to basics for him.

"Early stages one of the things I'm always focused on is mechanics and footwork," he said. "That's something you can't get enough work on. You can't get coached enough on it. You can't get enough reps. It's something I'm consistently looking at."

He's also keeping up his work on the playbook, even though he's been studying it all offseason, through a series of formal and informal workouts.

He wants to "feel better about the play as it's coming into my head and I'm going through my reads and going through my decisions before I make the call in the huddle,'" Palmer said. "And a whole bunch of other things. There's a ton of work to do by everybody in that locker room."

Timing with the receivers is less of a problem. The quarterbacks and their targets had an informal workout last month just to stay sharp. Palmer throwing to Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Roberts and Michael Floyd, among others.

"There really wasn't a big lapse in timing where we have to get back on the same page," Palmer said. "I think that's one really good thing about getting together in the month of July is you keep that rhythm and you keep improving it."

There is always a bit of dread for veterans going into camp. Palmer said he feels that less so this year than in any other. Such is the rejuvenating nature of a fresh start.

"We need to keep the attitude we have right now in week two, week three, week four," Palmer said, "because we have an attitude now where we're just trying to get better."

After a severe knee injury and the inevitable consequences of age, Palmer is not a mobile quarterback. Keeping him upright will be the main task on an offensive line still in the making.

There is competition at both tackles and the projected starter at left guard, first-round draft pick Jonathan Cooper, is absent in a contract dispute.

Palmer said it's "a fine line" between the benefits of having tough competition and the rewards of having good, experienced chemistry on the line.

Arians said that the blocking scheme will take into account Palmer's lack of mobility.

"You build it around the abilities of the guy," Arians said. "He's still athletic but he's not going to be the scrambler that say Ben or Andrew were, more in Peyton's mode ? move yourself within the pocket, get the ball out, don't take sacks."

As Palmer noted, there's always optimism at this point.

"It's a great feeling in the locker room," he said. "It's only Day One."

Anti-mafia raids target Rome, Calabria

Anti-mafia raids target Rome, Calabria

File picture shows a police patrol in Rome on April 29, 2013. Italian police said they launched two major anti-mafia operations Friday in Rome and the southern region of Calabria, targeting around 100 people

The Rome operation, described by Italian media as the largest ever undertaken in the capital region, targeted people who helped lead "illegal activities" in the city and the suburb of Ostia, police spokesman Mario Viola told AFP.

The second, entirely separate operation targeted members of the Ndrangheta in Catanzaro, Calabria, Viola said, adding that no less than 50 arrest warrants were issued for each of the operations.

In Calabria, the arrest warrants concerned "50 to 70 people, including entrepreneurs, politicians and lawyers", Viola said.

According to Italy's news agency Ansa, some 500 police officers took part in the Rome operation, "the largest ever undertaken" by the police in and around the capital. A helicopter, dog units and maritime police took part in it.

The warrants were the result of a long operation in Rome during which investigators uncovered "every criminal step in the mafia organisation," police said, from the adoption of new members into the fold to deals between bosses over territory.

Gangsters were also caught planning murders which they considered "necessary to guarantee and keep control of" profit-making activities in the area.

In Calabria, the heartland of the 'Ndrangheta, arrest warrants were issued for 65 people in Lamezia Terme, in the Catanzaro region, including "businessmen, politicians and lawyers," as well as doctors and prison employees, Viola said.

On top of mafia association, some of them are also accused of playing a role in several murders committed during a mafia-on-mafia war between 2005 and 2011.

The 'Ndrangheta -- whose name comes from the Greek word for courage or loyalty -- has a tight clan structure which has made it famously difficult to penetrate.

It runs an international crime network from its base in the southern region of Calabria and has been linked to operations across western and northern Europe and as far afield as the Americas and Australia.

Its core criminal activities are drug and arms trafficking, prostitution, extortion and illegal construction.

Caroline Kennedy nominated as ambassador to Japan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that he is nominating former first daughter Caroline Kennedy as U.S. ambassador to Japan, offering the most famous living member of a prominent American family a new role of service to country.

Kennedy, an attorney and bestselling book editor, is being rewarded for helping put Obama in the White House where her father served until his assassination 50 years ago. If confirmed, she would be the first woman in a post where many other prominent Americans have served to strengthen a vital Asian tie.

Kennedy helped propel Obama to the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination in a celebrated endorsement over Hillary Rodham Clinton ? the only time she's endorsed a presidential candidate other than her uncle Ted Kennedy in 1980. She was a co-chair of Obama's vice presidential search committee and in the 2012 race served as one of 35 national co-chairs of his re-election campaign.

The White House announced her nomination without any particular fanfare, listing her in a news release along with other selections for administration posts. Obama said in a statement that all the choices bring "a depth of experience and tremendous dedication to their new roles," but he offered no comment specific to Kennedy.

Japan is one of the United States' most important commercial and military partners and accustomed since the end of World War II to having renowned American political leaders serve as envoy. Former U.S. ambassadors to Japan include former Vice President Walter Mondale, former House Speaker Tom Foley and former Senate Majority Leaders Mike Mansfield and Howard Baker.

Kennedy, 55, doesn't have their foreign policy heft or any obvious ties to Japan, a key ally in dealing with North Korea's nuclear ambitions. She would replace John Roos, a wealthy former Silicon Valley lawyer and top Obama campaign fundraiser.

Thomas Berger, an international relations professor at Boston University, said some may be concerned that Kennedy doesn't have the experience to deal with thorny issues in the U.S.-Japan relationship, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade talks and the dispute over islands in the East China Sea claimed by both Japan and China. But Berger argued that Kennedy will have an experienced staff to guide her through policy matters, while she offers other assets ? celebrity appeal to the Japanese, a close relationship with Obama and her gender.

"Japanese women continue to look for role models who demonstrate that it is possible to be a woman and have a successful career in politics," Berger said. "I expect that many in both the United States and in Japan will want to use her to send that message to the Japanese public."

She also would bring a third generation of her family into the U.S. diplomatic corps. Her grandfather Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's ambassador to Britain, while her aunt Jean Kennedy Smith was ambassador to Ireland under President Bill Clinton.

Caroline Kennedy was five days shy of her sixth birthday when her father was killed, and she lived most of the rest of her life in New York City. She earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University, got a law degree from Columbia University, married exhibit designer Edwin Schlossberg and had three children.

Kennedy is president of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and chair of the senior advisory committee of the Institute of Politics at Harvard. She has served on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations, helped raise millions of dollars for New York schools and edited numerous bestselling books on history, law and poetry.

She considered running for political office after Clinton resigned the New York Senate seat to serve as Obama's secretary of state. But Kennedy eventually withdrew herself from consideration to fill the seat, once held by her uncle Robert F. Kennedy, citing unspecified personal reasons.

Security researcher claims to have reported bugs shortly before Apple took down its developer portal

London-based security researcher Ibrahim Balic has come forward, claiming he may be the one behind Apple's security threat. Following Apple's statement to developers earlier regarding a security threat to the developer portal, Balic posted a comment on TechCrunch's report of the story trying to set the record straight that no harm was ever intended.

In the post, Balic explains that he uncovered 13 bugs while researching Apple's security, and reported them all through Apple's bug reporting site, bugreport.apple.com. One of those bugs allowed him access to developers' user names, email addresses, and possibly other personal information. According to Balic, Apple's developer site went down just a few hours after submitting the last bug report. He has still not been contacted by Apple, but appears frustrated that the incident is being treated as a security threat, asserting that he intended no harm and reported bugs to Apple as they were discovered.

Balic also posted a video on YouTube in which he shows some of the data he was able to acquire for several different users where you can see names and email addresses. He also explained in emails with 9to5Mac and The Next Web that the personal information disclosed did not only affect developers, but non-developers as well. The video ends with a written statement from Balic reiterating that he shared the bugs he found with Apple and intends to delete any of the user data he acquired as part of his research.

We won't know for sure if Balic is ultimately responsible for Apple's takedown and subsequent overhaul of the developer portal unless Apple confirms it, but it would be an interesting coincidence if he is not. We have reached out to Balic for comment, but have not yet heard back.

Multiple reports suggest that a person has fatally jumped off the George Washington Bridge, which connects upper Manhattan with Fort Lee, New Jersey.?

According to the posts the suicide happened at around 10pm.

Officials recovered the body on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River and found the jumper already dead.

The incident has caused severe delays on the bridge. Near midnight Sunday the Port Authority reported that there was a delay of 15 minutes on the lower deck and 30 minutes on the upper deck due to 'general volume of traffic.' By 1am the traffic alert was no longer in affect.

Several calls to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were not returned Sunday night.

Canada needs to up conservation game, preserving half of boreal forests: paper

A group of top international scientists says Canada needs to dramatically up its conservation game to ensure its vast northern forests remain healthy in the face of increasing industrial pressure.

In a paper to be presented today at the International Congress of Conservation Biology in Baltimore, Md., its authors argue that Canada needs to preserve about half of its boreal forest. That's significantly more than the 10 per cent level researchers previously thought was necessary to conserve natural systems.

"Conservation science has caught up to an understanding of what is really needed," said Jeffs Wells, a scientist with the Boreal Songbird Initiative and one of 23 researchers from Canada and around the world who contributed to the paper.

"We need to have much larger spaces than was ever realized."

Scientists used to set conservation goals by looking at single species or representative slices of landscape, Wells said.

"They didn't really think about how interconnected places were and how animals moved across the landscape, how water flow is affected, all of those sorts of things. As we started to look at multiple species, whole ecosystems and how they function, we now know that it's not really possible to maintain all those values without really thinking about much bigger scales of conservation."

The boreal forest is a huge stretch of green that runs across the northern part of most provinces and the southern tips of the territories. Its 5.8 million square kilometres of forests, taiga, tundra, peatlands, salt marshes, rivers and lakes include the largest blocks of intact forest and wetlands left on Earth ? more than half the world?s intact boreal forest and its largest area of surface freshwater.

It's also home to caribou, grizzlies, wolverines, lynx and wolves as well as to many aboriginal communities that depend on it for food and cultural sustenance.

The report notes increasing industrial activity.

The authors say about 730,000 square kilometres have already been disturbed by oil and gas, mining, forestry and hyro development. Many boreal species from woodland caribou to Atlantic salmon to Canada warblers appear on at-risk lists.

Canada had the world's largest share of mineral exploration spending in 2011. Much of that probing was in the boreal forest.

Also at risk are "ecological services" such as water quality and marine productivity in places such as the Great Lakes, said Wells. Development also releases carbon stored in the boreal forest, which aggravates climate change.

Wells acknowledged that setting aside half that ecosystem will involve tough choices.

Agreements already made, such as the Canadian Boreal Forest Initiative signed between environmental groups and forestry companies, have frayed under implementation pressures. Attempts by aboriginal groups to use land claims to establish large protected areas have been resisted by governments.

But it's possible to have both conservation and economic development, said Wells.

"There are massive areas still open for development. We know that these northern communities need continued economic opportunities."

The paper says local communities, including aboriginal groups, should have an important say in development. It adds that land-use planning that takes into account connections between watersheds, ecological zones and migration paths should come before lands are opened to exploration or development.

Rigorous environmental monitoring that also watches for cumulative effects should be conducted and developers should strive for minimum impacts.

"You can't get away from the facts," Wells said. "And the facts are that if we want to maintain these values, then that's what we have to do."

Proper conservation is an investment, not a cost, he said.

"A balanced approach to conservation is avoiding the mistakes that other countries have made that they are paying for now."

Storm could play wild card for California fire - Sun, 21 Jul 2013 PST

IDYLLWILD, Calif. ? Firefighters got little help from Mother Nature on Saturday as much-needed rainfall from expected thunderstorms didn?t materialize for a huge wildfire burning in the Southern California mountains near Palm?Springs.

Fire officials were hopeful the storms, which can also bring wind, lightning and other volatile conditions, would douse some of the flames, but they said there was no significant?rainfall.

Cooler temperatures overnight, however, helped firefighters make progress on the fire?s northern and southern flanks in the San Jacinto Mountains, as personnel worked to spare nearby desert communities from?damage.

The blaze, which grew to roughly 42 square miles, was 49 percent contained, officials?said.

Thunderstorms present a major threat to progress this weekend. Combined with hot air on the ground, the unstable air could create a strong updraft that draws smoke high into the atmosphere, fire spokesman Capt. Mike Lindbery?said.

If the smoke column rises too high, moisture at the top could freeze and the ice?s weight could make the column collapse, creating a strong?downdraft.

?We?re very concerned because this is the condition in the past that has definitely caused big firestorms and the death of citizens and firefighters,? Lindbery?said.

Storm cells approached the area Friday afternoon but dissipated before reaching the fire zone. But the threat would remain through the weekend, and fire officials hoped it would be mild cloud cover and high humidity that could help in the?firefight.

Save Money by Collecting Accomplishments Instead of Items

Save Money by Collecting Accomplishments Instead of Items

There's nothing wrong with being a collector, but if the items you collect can be consumed, like books, movies, or games, you can save space and money by tracking the things you've completed, rather than filling your home with a physical collection.

Take books, for example. Book collectors might fill up their shelves before they've had time to read everything they bought. Not only are these unread books a waste of money and space, they can also be a source of nagging stress until you finish them. Trent at The Simple Dollar broke this cycle by "collecting" a list of books he's read, rather than stockpiling a small library at home:

Rather than collecting books, I?ve moved on to trying to build a collection of ?books I?ve read.? I?m keeping a careful list and I get that same proud rush when I can add a book to that list of reads. I?m no longer worried about buying books at all ? I?m perfectly happy to get them at the library or to download classics.

Rather than collecting games, I?m more interested in a list of games I?ve played or electronic games I?ve ?beaten? (or played to some satisfactory level of completion). I now prefer to stick with games until I?ve thoroughly played them or else trade them with friends. I also love going to community board game nights.

Obviously, this won't work for every type of collection, but it's a great idea for media collections. There are even apps dedicated to these lists like Done Not Done. Admittedly, you can't fill a bookshelf with a list of things you've read or watched, but you can always revisit it with pride, all while saving money and space.

Update: Whoops, looks like we covered this already. Sorry about the duplicate!
