Polishing Windows on your Mac

Features

Call it entrepreneurial spirit or call it?overdue enlightenment, but Heidi Holmes?was in the mood for something different?when she founded Adage, a specialist?recruitment agency for mature-age?workers, early last year. Having left a 10-year career?to start her own business, it was a time for major?changes; little wonder that she also picked the time to?make the jump from Windows to a Mac.

It wasn?t a completely smooth transition: Although?she ?adjusted? to Mac Mail and the Mac OS X?environment, Holmes says she drew the line at the?Mac version of Microsoft Office.

?I?m happy with the Mac, and the way it syncs?and looks after itself,? she explains. ?It took a period?of adjustment to get used to Mac Mail and not using?Outlook, although that works both ways: I don?t visit?Gmail anymore and I love that it?s all in the one spot.

?But I was entrenched in the Microsoft way, and?didn?t really see the advantage of learning the Mac?Excel and Word. It?s kind of the same, but I was more?proficient in the Windows version.?

Her ideal solution came quickly and easily: Her?web developers loaded her MacBook with VMware?s?Fusion tool, which would let her run Offi ce 2010 ? the?main applications in which she works ? alongside her?Mac applications on the same desktop.

The setup has served her well ever since, allowing?her to manage her business while enjoying the benefits?of the Mac platform. ?I?ve had no issues, and found it?really easy to run everything I need,? she says. ?I?m?quite functional with my laptop and my phone.?

HOLDING ONTO WINDOWS

With most Australians getting exposure to the?Windows world well before they potentially branch?out and get their own Macs, backwards compatibility?remains as popular now as it did, five years ago,?when Apple announced it would shift its architecture?to run on Intel CPUs that were equally capable of?running Windows.

Numerous upgrades later, the two market-leading?Windows-on-Mac applications ? VMware Fusion?and Parallels Desktop ? have progressed by leaps and?bounds, long ago cementing their position as must have?accessories for Mac switchers who want to bring?one or more key Windows applications over the wall?with them.

If you?re unfamiliar with the two applications, take?a moment to learn how they work: Both combine some?well-established technology ? desktop virtualisation ??with quite a lot of programming magic.

Desktop virtualisation creates a single logical?file on disk (although it may be physically split into?pieces to facilitate easier backup via Time Machine,?and faster loading) called a ?virtual machine? (VM).?The VM is, for all intents and purposes, a Windows?computer that is managed by a ?hypervisor? built into?Fusion or Parallels.

When Windows queries the environment it?s in?for information about the system it thinks it?s running?on, the hypervisor intercepts the calls and provides?the correct answers. As long as it?s kept happy and?gets enough CPU cycles and information when it?needs them, Windows keeps ticking along; think about ?how the stars of Inception worked to delude their?subconscious defences, and you?re not too far off.

The magic comes in the form of custom-written?drivers that tweak Windows to perform better in its?VM than it might normally do. Progressive updates?to both Fusion and Parallels have added ever-moresophisticated?drivers that do things like providing?smoother 3D graphics support; allowing the Windows?VM to access Mac resources like the iSight/FaceTime?camera and other USB-connected devices; delivering?seamless network access by piggybacking onto the?Mac?s internet and network connections; and more.

One nice trick is that the hypervisors enable drag-and-drop file sharing that transcends the boundaries?of the virtual machine to link the two environments.?For this reason, of course, it?s imperative that?Windows VMs be loaded with an updated antivirus?and security suite, so nasties can?t find their way?into your Mac through the hypervisor?s integration?features; if you?re concerned, you can also set up a?VM so it has no connections whatsoever with the?operating system it?s running on.

Opening Windows. Virtual machines such as VMware Fusion give you the ability to run Windows-only programs like Microsoft Project, Access and Internet Explorer.

Basic VM functionality was nailed down several?versions ago, and subsequent versions have focused?on adding new features that make Windows apps?behave more like Mac apps. For example, Parallels???Coherence? mode or Fusion?s ?Unity? mode make?the Windows desktop disappear, letting individual?Windows applications run in Mac-like windows on?the desktop. These features allow users to focus on?the task at hand regardless of whether they?re using?Mac or Windows apps.

The latest versions of the products ? Fusion 4?and Parallels 7 ? have been optimised for Mac OS X?10.7 Lion, adding support for features like full-screen?mode and Multi-Touch swipes, as well as the addition?of Windows applications to Lion-only features like?Launchpad and Mission Control. These are usability?more than functionality improvements, but they?burnish the edges of the Win-on-Mac environment?and offer an ever-so-carefully-integrated solution.

By erasing the arbitrary lines that used to make?Windows VMs stick out from the Mac desktop like a?sore thumb, these features maintain the appearance?of equity between Windows programs and Mac?applications. They can, however, have unintended?side effects: Since Windows programs are indexed?in Spotlight and can be launched with one click, it?s?entirely possible to inadvertently launch a Windows?application ? and find yourself ticking away the?minutes while the hypervisors load and Windows boots.

As the latest step in their never-ending quest to?justify repeated upgrades, the latest versions know?a few more tricks that may or may not be useful?for you. Windows? ?Aero? rich user interface is now?fully supported, as is Mac OS X?s underlying 64-?bit architecture. Backed with a legion of tweaks,?hypervisor performance is now said to impose nearly?no processor burden ? making many Windows games?run at or near full speed.

?It?s very much full of performance-driven?enhancements,? says Parallels ANZ general manager?Kevin Greely. ?Exhaustive benchmarking has shown?that virtualisation has come down to the point where?there?s so little (hypervisor) overhead that the word??overhead? doesn?t even matter anymore.?

The new version also offers a host of other?accoutrements: Parallels 7, for example, can now?run a guest instance of Mac OS X ? allowing for?testing of new applications in a secure, separate?environment that?s isolated from the host computer.?There?s support for 7.1 surround sound, faster pausing?and resuming of VMs and an interesting add-on in?the form of the Parallels Mobile application, which?lets users access their Mac and Windows desktops ??including streaming Flash video with sound ? from?their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

Flash on an iPad. The $5.49 Parallels Mobile application lets users access their Mac and Windows desktops ? including streaming Flash video with sound ? from iOS devices.

For its part, VMware claims 90 new features in?Fusion 4, including optimised graphics drivers that?provide a 2.5x boost in 3D graphics speed. It can?also load Lion as a guest operating system in a VM,?resume suspended VMs faster than before, offers a?new App Unity feature for tight Lion integration,?updates USB and Bluetooth support to the latest?versions and provides an additional layer of security?through encryption and password protection of VMs.

?We?ve focused Fusion 4 generally around usability,??says David Wakeman, senior product line manager for?end-use computing with VMware. ?The overhead of?using desktop virtualisation is now quite low, so a lot of?features are designed around slick integration with Mac?OS X, so the apps look and feel and smell as much like?a Mac app as you can possibly get.

?That?s really important ? especially for new users?to Macs who are struggling to grapple with something?new. You don?t have to be a virtualisation geek to use?this product; you can be a mere mortal and make it?happen quickly.?

MACS AT WORK

Because they provide both Windows compatibility?and better performance than ever, current Windows?virtualisation solutions offer far more appeal than?their earlier versions. This would seem to make them?more acceptable within corporate environments,?where employers continue to dance a curious line?between sticking with their Windows bias and?embracing Macs.

Fitting In. Sally Farrow uses Parallels Desktop so her Mac fits into a Windows-only office environment.

Many businesses have found a compromise by?buying iMacs for their great form factor, then running?Windows on them using Boot Camp or by completely?wiping the drive and installing the operating system?from scratch. This provides Windows environments?with access to the iMac?s excellent and large screen,?and integrated form factor ? making it particularly?useful in space-constrained or public-facing?locations.

Yet just because you can run Windows on your?Mac doesn?t mean your employer will be too happy?about it: Despite their Windows-friendly nature,?recent figures suggest Macs are still pariahs in many?businesses. A recent study by Forrester Research,?for example, found that fully 41 percent of North?American and European companies still don?t allow?Mac-wielding users access to company resources.

Around half of the companies surveyed allowed?Mac users to access web-based email, with just?37 percent OK-ing internet access via Mac and?around one in five allowing use of Macs for hosted?application access, internal network access and native?email access. And just six percent said they would?install key corporate applications onto users? Macs.

Such results confirm?there?s still a long way?to go before Macs shake?off their reputation as?being incompatible?with the corporate?environment ? even as?growing normalisation?of bring-your-own?(BYO) computing?concepts have increased?the acceptability and?popularity of Macs within?the business world.

Sally Farrow found?out just how hard it can?be to overcome executive?scepticism when she?joined financial-services?firm YourShare.com?.au and suggested to the?directors that she would?prefer to use a Mac for?work. In a Windows-only?company, this was a hard?sell ? but Farrow leaned?on the availability of?dual-platform capabilities?to push her case over the?line.

At first, she used Boot?Camp to switch between?the two platforms ? and?was starting to regret her?decision.

?It really slowed?the machine down?massively,? she recalls,??because I had to change?so often. I was having to boot in and out of my?design programs on the Mac side, then load other?apps on the PC side. It was really messing with my?computer, which was so slow with Boot Camp that it?struggled.?

Parallels universe. Social media consultant Kate van der Voort moved to Parallels after becoming disillusioned with running Windows via Boot Camp.

Her solution was to invest in a copy of Parallels?Desktop ? and since then, she says, ?things have been?brilliant. I use both at the same time, all day?.

Sticking with the Windows version of Office not?only ensures she can exchange documents with?banks and other financial-services companies, but?has proved to be cheaper as well since the company?already had a site license for the Windows version;?the Mac one would have had to be bought separately.

Although the dual-OS technology is up for?it, these sorts of considerations can often lend?convincing weight to those who want to make the?case for bringing their own Macs to work. Some big?companies still maintain their opposition on any of?a number of grounds ? some of them rooted more?in policy and governance than legitimate technical?objections ? but Macs are continuing to grow in?popularity within small businesses, where sole traders?and small-business operators are often long-time Mac?users, or are steered to MacBooks by well-meaning?friends and associates.

For most, the transition is strange for a while?but quickly becomes a non-event. But it doesn?t?always go well, as Kate van der Voort of social-media?consulting firm Social Mediology found out.

A lifetime PC user, Van der Voort moved to?Macs last year after a client bought her the new?system. Things were rocky at fi rst: She had ?all sorts?of problems? syncing mail to her phone through?Outlook, for example, and had just bought Windows-only?applications including MYOB and GoToMeeting?s?GoToWebinar hosting software, which meant she?couldn?t really make the switch as she might have?liked to.

Van der Voort ended up installing a Windows?configuration using Apple?s Boot Camp, the third?and increasingly clunky option for those wanting to?run Windows on their Macs. Although it worked, she?quickly grew tired of rebooting her system between?Windows and Mac environments.

?I love the fact that I?ve got both Windows and?Mac on the same computer, but find it a hassle to?have to shut down and restart,? she says. ?Inevitably?I?ll be doing data entry in MYOB through Boot Camp,?then there are things I need from my email on the?Mac OS X side.?

Support through the local Apple Store has left?her ?blown away by their level of dedication and?willingness to help?, and she has stuck with her new?system despite the initial hurdles. Her recent purchase?of Parallels promises easier co-existence between?the two environments, although Van der?Voort has had other troubles including?the search for a replacement for Mac Mail?and sync problems with Outlook 2011.

?The only downfall with the Apple?Store is that if you ask how to do?something that uses anything that?s not?an Apple product, they?re not interested,??she says. ?I would love to be on a full?Mac solution, but for now I?m in this?precarious it?s-all-working situation.?

DEVELOPING A TRUST

One category of user that?s been?particularly eager to embrace Windows-on-Mac solutions is software developers,?among whom MacBooks have become?massively popular because they deliver the everyday?benefits of the Mac OS X environment but allow?multiple versions of Windows to be run within?VMware or Parallels VMs.

This facilitates development and testing of?applications for corporate Windows desktops, where?compatibility issues must be identifi ed and dealt with?long before applications are actually rolled out. With?a Windows-on-Mac solution in place, for example,?it?s possible for designers at web development house?Loud & Clear Creative to test their creations in all of?the desktop operating system configurations in which?they?re likely to be used.

?We use Parallels extensively for cross-browser?testing on the websites we build,? says Ben Beath, a?web developer with the Sydney and Melbourne-based?design house. Loud & Clear coders run two screens?side by side ? one with their Mac desktop, and the?other with Windows XP, Vista or 7 depending on the?application.

?We?re able to identify and replicate bugs quickly,?fix them in the code and then review the applied?updates instantly,? Beath says. ?Cross-browser testing?used to take us days; now, we simply have the different?test environments ready to deploy as required.?

This approach is particularly important when it?comes to Internet Explorer 9 ? the Windows-only?browser that is, despite declining popularity, still?used by about half of all Windows computers. Unlike?rivals Safari, Firefox and Opera, IE9 is a Windows-only?solution ? and it runs at a healthy clip in a?Windows VM thanks to the latest tweaks in Parallels?and Fusion.

Websites aren?t the only thing being developed?better thanks to Windows-on-Mac setups; developers?of complex applications are increasingly finding them?invaluable as they warm to the benefi ts of Mac OS?and its development tools.

MEX, a Queensland-based developer of?maintenance management software with 30 staff, has?embraced the Mac and now develops its tools ? which?include both Windows and Microsoft Silverlight-based?front ends as well as an iPad application ? on?Macs running Windows via VMware Fusion.

The development of the iPad application earlier?this year was the catalyst for the change, says R&D?manager Matt Calcutt, but developers have quickly?warmed to the dual-operating system as they realised?it made them both more effi cient and more effective.

?Using Fusion, we can just jump between Mac and?Windows, grabbing, copying and pasting straight out?of Visual Studio on the Windows side, and doing a?straight paste into XCode on the Mac side,? Calcutt?explains. ?By changing just a bit of syntax, we?re up?and running, and debugging, straight away.?

Fusion power. Matt Calcutt says VMware Fusion has made his team of software developers both more efficient and more effective.

Cross-platform compatibility has also helped at a?functional level, since the iPad application ? which?must be developed using XCode on Mac OS X ??runs and must be tested against back-end Windows?applications such as Microsoft SQL Server and OData?middleware.

MEX developers have also found much to love in?the broad support for development by like-minded?firms around the world.

?We had been a Microsoft shop through and?through, but we found the Apple development?community was just so much more friendly and?happy to help,? Calcutt says. ?Wrapped up with?Fusion it just made our development cycles so simple?and quick. Now, I tell every Microsoft person and?partner I meet about the comparisons between our?development community and Microsoft?s.?

Perhaps the only issue MEX has had is when?the two development platforms are running at the?same time: both are computationally intensive, and?heavy compiling jobs can slow performance if run?simultaneously. But this is an expected symptom?of heavy CPU usage, and a small trade-off for a?development tool that?s changed the way MEX?operates ? in the office and out.

?Our developers work from home about 90 percent?of the time,? says Calcutt, ?and this has been a huge?boon for us because we can cover all the bases on the?one machine with minimal effort.?

BETTER RENDITION

Multi-OS setups are proving valuable to other types of?developers, too. As well as delivering convenience to?new converts and easy jumping between platforms for?developers, many users are fi nding they need to keep?Windows around mainly because Microsoft Office for?Mac simply isn?t good enough for their requirements.

Peter Riches, principal consultant with technical?writing group Red Pony, says he and others within his?group have adopted VMware Fusion for exactly this?reason. In their line of work, having perfect fidelity of?documents is absolutely essential ? and this becomes?impossible when a not-exactly-perfect translation of?technically demanding features means formatting-heavy?documents look just that little bit different in?Windows than they do on the Mac.

?A lot of the documentation we do for clients?involves setting up an application to work with a?variety of users,? Riches explains. ?These might, for?example, be specific instructions for how to use a?piece of machinery. Some clients are using different?versions of Word and we?ve found we need to run?both a Mac and PC environment to set up templates?and formatting correctly ? so users can just pick them?up and use them properly.?

The problem isn?t as severe with current versions?of Office under Mac (2011) and Windows (2010) as it?was between old versions, such as the 2004 Mac and?2003 Windows versions ? but it?s still there. And in a?three-man operation that depends on its presentation?to survive, even the small differences can make a?difference. For this reason, the firm runs a number?of Mac and Windows versions of Office and switches?between them as necessary.

Lack of add-on support in prior Mac versions was?another sticking point: Intelligent Editing?s PerfectIt,?for example, applies a range of rules for consistency?to Word documents but only runs under Windows?versions of Office. Running so many different?versions ensures the team can tap into its capabilities?even when running in the Mac version.

Riches is also a big fan of Daylite, the Mac-only?personal organiser on which he ?basically? runs his?business. ?It?s harder to fi nd as much good software?for the Mac,? he explains, ?but if you can fi nd an?app that does what you need, it seems they make the?effort to really make it work well.?

New Arrival

Oh, so this is where the new arrival post should go? In that case, my mistake. I have many names, most of them good. Call me what you like, but it doesn't mean I have to answer. I'm old enough to know better and too young to care. I like everyone, but cross my friends the wrong way and I'll eat you with a side of Fava Beans, to start. Otherwise, nice to meet all of you, and bear with me while I try to figure this stuff out. Also, presently, my "N" key likes to ignore me, just a forewarning.

Corruption in India: I was approached for a bribe

Our correspondent learns first-hand the mechanics of petty bribery in India. Meanwhile, corruption fighter Anna Hazare called off his hunger strike today.

As New Delhi gears up for New Year's celebrations, the police are rolling out roadblocks.

In the United States, roadblocks are a common way to check for drivers who have had one too many drinks on New Years, but for police in Delhi, these roadblocks often translate into "how much will they pay to get out of this?"

And if the fight over the current anticorruption bill in Parliament and the recent hunger strike by activist Anna Hazare are any indicators, the situation is not likely to improve any time soon without the help of hundreds of thousands of Indians?pushing back against the system of bribery where they can.

Mr. Hazare had inspired millions of Indians to protest against corruption this summer, and began a three-day hunger strike this week to press for tougher action against corruption in the country's bureaucracy. His fast aligned with the Indian Parliament negotiating an antigraft bill that would set up an ombudsman's office to investigate embezzling, influence peddling, and other forms of official theft.

However, both the hunger strike and bill have fallen short of their objectives. After a high fever and poor crowd turn out, Hazare called off it off a day early. A compromise bill was approved by Parliament?s lower house Tuesday, and is likely to pass the upper house Wednesday. If it does, it could establish an independent body at the central and state government levels to investigate charges of corruption.

But Hazare and other opposition groups say the bill is weak, and will do little to truly tackle the country?s corruption. Moreover, there is no guarantee that the agency, which is responsible for monitoring this bill, will not itself become corrupt.

According to Transparency International, 54 percent of Indians paid a bribe in the past year, and the organization ranked India 95 out of 183 countries in its Corruption Perception Index for 2011. Given these statistics, winning the daily battle of graft that has bled India of some $128 billion in the past decade is nothing short of herculean.

But a recent encounter with a Delhi traffic cop gave me a little insight into how ordinary citizens can start fighting.

On Christmas Eve, an Indian friend and I were parking, near a packed shopping area, when a cop looking for a little extra cash approached us. Our crime? The tinted windows on my friend?s car were too dark.

Being a hothead from the American South, I was irate as it was clear to me the cop was just looking for money.

However, my friend who is known for his prudence in these kinds of situations had a wiser approach. He simply told the policeman to give him the ticket. The cop paused, and then let him go.

When the cop walked away, I asked my friend why we got out of the ticket.

"You must understand the economics of bribery," he said. "It's Christmas Eve, the place is packed, and it?s high-time for making a quick buck. Every minute counts. In the time it would take him to write me a ticket, he could be making hundreds of rupees."

As India struggles to tackle corruption with new laws and key arrests, ordinary Indians like my friend can make a difference by understanding the system of bribery pushing back where they can.

Parks Canada looking for ways to cash in

Parks Canada is looking to make a little green.

With user fees at national parks and historic sites frozen until 2013, the agency is trying to find other ways to make money. So the agency has commissioned a $50,000 study to identify potential sources of revenue.

"The purpose of this statement of work / contract is to analyze Parks Canada's (PCA) potential to generate increased net revenue from sources that are currently under-performing or are untapped and to leverage an appropriate return to taxpayers from government investment," says a contract document.

The agency manages 42 national parks and 167 national historic sites, but only charges fees at 125 locations. Those fees cover everything from entry to national parks and historic sites to permits for fishing and camp fires.

But a study done earlier this year found Parks Canada charges about as much as people are willing to pay, "and that little opportunity exists for significant new revenues from fee increases."

Even if the agency wanted to hike its fees, it would have to wait a few years. In 2009, the federal government announced a two-year freeze at all national parks and historic sites, which has since been extended to 2013 for the general public and 2014 for commercial groups.

So Parks Canada is now looking at other options.

The contract document suggests retail, concessions, online activities, licensing or royalties, rentals and memberships might be ways to make more money.

Parks Canada recently launched its own clothing line featuring its iconic beaver logo. The agency plans to sell it at national parks before moving to the Internet and brick-and-mortar stores in Canada's biggest cities. The company that gets the contract will design the merchandise and then sell it, with Parks Canada getting a royalty each year or a cut of wholesale revenue, whichever is greater.

Other options are also on the table ? such as going cap in hand to wealthy donors. The contract document says new sources of revenue could come from "fundraising, philanthropy, foundations and corporate donations that would yield net income for Parks Canada operations."

The document also says visits to parks and historic sites has fallen in recent years. Visits dropped seven per cent between 2006-07 and 2010-11, down to 20.2 million visits from nearly 21.8 million.

Money from visits to national parks and historic sites accounted for $78.8 million of Parks Canada's $113.4 million in total revenues for 2010-11.

The agency says it recovers about 30 per cent of "the overall costs of providing visitor experience services and facilities." The money-making exercise comes at a time when departments have been ordered to trim their budgets by five to 10 per cent in the hopes of saving the government $4 billion by 2014.

Johnson says he's leaving GOP for Libertarians

(AP) ? Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a longshot candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, said Wednesday he is leaving the GOP in favor of running as a Libertarian.

Johnson told a news conference at the state Capitol that the decision was difficult but that he "was deeply disappointed by the treatment I received in the Republican nomination process."

Johnson has been excluded from all but two GOP presidential debates. He also has barely registered in the polls.

The former two-term governor said that if he earns the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination, he will appear on the ballots in all 50 states and will not be "held hostage to a system rigged for the wealthiest and best-known candidates in a handful of states who happen to have early primaries."

Johnson is fiscally conservative but supports such liberal causes as legalizing marijuana and abortion rights.

Whale sightings something to spout about

Gray whales cruise through Southern California waters every winter, but this month the migratory giants have shown up so early and in such numbers that they are astounding many longtime observers.

Whale spotters stationed at Point Vicente in Rancho Palos Verdes have logged a record 163 sightings so far this December, more than they have seen at this point in 28 years.

Although the gray whale-watching season doesn't typically start until the end of December, the unprecedented number of early arrivals is delighting tourists, boaters and divers as the animals travel south along the coast to Mexico.

Volunteers for the American Cetacean Society/Los Angeles Chapter Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project work from sunup to sundown between Dec. 1 and May 15, using binoculars and high-powered spotting scopes to find whales and log their numbers from an overlook at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center.

"I've seen some pretty good years but never anything like this," said Joyce Daniels, a volunteer who heads the whale census from noon to dusk. On Monday, when there were more than two dozen sightings, "We had whales everywhere. So many I was having trouble figuring out which whale was which," she said. "It's a real adrenaline rush to have so many whales."

After spotting them by their spouts, the eagle-eyed observers determine whether they are indeed gray whales by their mottled coloring, the shape of their flukes or the gentle notches in their backs. For each confirmed sighting, they note the whale's location and what direction it was swimming and add it to a running tally on a dry erase board. Visitors are offered binoculars to scan for the creatures themselves.

By this point in December last year, the observers had spotted 26 gray whales. The previous record was 133, spotted in 1996.

It's something of a mystery why so many gray whales are passing through Southern California this early in the season. But it could have to do with climate, food supplies or other conditions far away in Arctic waters, where the huge mammals begin their annual journey to the shallow lagoons and bays of Baja California to give birth. It's also possible that more are being spotted because they are venturing nearer to shore.

More than 20,000 gray whales migrate each year from the Arctic to Baja California and back again in the spring. Their population, once depleted by commercial whaling, successfully rebounded and was taken off the endangered species list in 1994.

The influx of gray whales has sightseeing vessels off to a busy start. Already, divers have captured dramatic underwater video within an arm's reach of a juvenile gray whale in Laguna Beach.

On an excursion Tuesday out of San Pedro's 22nd Street Landing ? the first of the year for the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium's Whalewatch program ? a small boatload of whale seekers crowded along the bow of the ship, marveling as a gray whale spouted and surfaced over and over again a few miles from the Port of Los Angeles.

Gray whales, which can grow up to 50 feet long, arrive so predictably each winter that decades ago, even as other species struggled, they became a reliable draw for sightseers, said Bernardo Alps, a volunteer naturalist for the Cabrillo Whalewatch program.

"They're really the species that started whale watching here in Southern California in the 1950s," he said. "The idea of watching them instead of hunting them."

Though it may take months to learn if the gray whales' strong showing this month is part of a larger, seasonal uptick ? sightings typically peak by the end of January ? their admirers are hoping it means the animals are healthy, well-fed and reproducing.

"It's really incredible. It may very well be the whales are coming earlier or coming in closer," said Alisa Schulman-Janiger, director and coordinator of the whale census. "To me, it's a very good sign that things are going very well with them."

10 Most Popular Google Doodles of 2011

doodles

With today's musical holiday doodle, Google is wrapping up 2011 with almost 50 U.S. homepage doodles. The search giant has honored musicians, actors, scientists, authors, astronauts, and more this year?some with elaborate, interactive imagery and others with simple drawings.

The doodles have proven so popular that Google recently opened up on online store via Zazzle.com that sells merchandise adorned with the doodle of your choice. Pick up a mug featuring Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. How about a tote bag with the doodle for photography pioneer Louis Daguerre? Or a t-shirt celebrating Google's 13th birthday? Pick a logo and Google will afix it to the product of your choice?from $11 for a mug to $48 for a custom skateboard.

But what's the best doodle of them all? In addition to the various U.S. doodles, Google has also created homepage masterpieces for celebs, public figures, and holidays around the world. But here in the U.S., there were at least 10 that caught our eye, and those of our readers. Many of the most popular doodles this year included an interactive component, like the videos for Charlie Chaplin and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Childhood cartoons also featured prominently, like those from Roger Hargreaves and Richard Scarry to Jim Henson and Gumby creator Art Clokey.

We also tapped our inner dancer for a Martha Graham-themed doodle and cracked up once again in honor of Lucille Ball's 100th birthday. Not to be outdone, we also explored the oceans with Jules Verne and created our own mini masterpieces thanks to Les Paul.

Check out the slideshow below for a look back at some of our favorite Google doodles from 2011, and let us know your favorites in the comments below.

Lions in, Eagles out, heading into NFL finales

The Lions are in; the Eagles are out. Atlanta is closing in on a playoff berth, as is Cincinnati, while the Bears, Jets and Raiders need some help.

All part of a wild closing act to the NFL season.

With two games remaining this weekend before teams hunker down for their finales (Chicago at Green Bay on Sunday night, Atlanta at New Orleans on Monday night), the most notable news was made by Detroit.

The last time the Lions were a force, Barry Sanders was in their backfield. Sanders retired after the 1998 season, and Detroit made the postseason the next year then plummeted to the bottom of the league. In 2008, the Lions posted the only 0-16 record in NFL history.

Now, they're in the chase for the championship. Their 38-10 rout of San Diego secured an NFC wild card.

"Once you get to the playoffs, it's anybody's ballgame," defensive end Cliff Avril said. "The city of Detroit needs it. They've been waiting on us to win for a while. It's such a football town and we haven't been winning, so it's huge."

At 10-5, the Lions join North champion Green Bay, West winner San Francisco and South leader New Orleans in the postseason parade. Either Dallas or the New York Giants also will get there ? they meet next Sunday night at the Meadowlands in a winner-take-all matchup.

So if the Cowboys and Giants, both 8-7, are battling for the NFC East crown, where does that leave the Eagles, the most disappointing team in the league?

Dreaming of the playoffs.

The team that "won" free agency after the NFL lockout by signing such prizes as cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, defensive end Jason Babin and receiver Steve Smith needs to beat Washington next Sunday to finish at .500. Not much return on the dollar for Philly.

"If we had gotten into the playoffs, we would have definitely done some damage," Michael Vick said after the Eagles (7-8) beat Dallas 20-7 on Sunday. "It's unfortunate we didn't. That's the game of football. We made some mistakes early (this season) and got behind in the win-loss column. But we're just happy we're finishing strong."

Finishing strong but going to the playoffs: New England, which won its seventh in a row by rallying from a 17-0 hole to beat Miami 27-24. It was the 10th time this season a team has come back from at least 17 points to win, the most in a single NFL season.

"All the while, we never gave up on one another and never said anything negative to one another," defensive lineman Vince Wilfork said. "Going down 17-0 is a pretty big deficit, but once again this team showed its character."

The AFC East champion Patriots (12-3) would get home-field advantage for the playoffs by beating Buffalo next weekend.

Green Bay (13-1 heading into its home game against Chicago) needs one more win to grab the home-field edge in the NFC.

That's the simple stuff. As for the chaotic, well, just one look at the AFC wild-card race after Sunday's results can make your head spin.

Suffice to say that the Bengals (9-6) are in control. But if they lose to Baltimore (11-4), which needs a victory to clinch the AFC North over Pittsburgh (also 11-4), it brings three other teams into play for the final AFC berth: Tennessee, Oakland and the New York Jets.

The Jets (8-7), like Philadelphia, are one of the NFL's major flops this year. For much of the stretch drive, the Jets were in charge of the chase for the second AFC wild card. They kept messing up, though, and after Sunday's ugly 29-14 loss to the Giants, they barely are relevant.

"We play this game to win the Super Bowl," star cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "So even to be talking about that excites me, and I think it excites the team for us to go out there and try to win the Super Bowl. That's what it's about. It's not about nothing else."

Unless everyone else in the AFC wild-card scramble loses, Revis and company can forget the Super Bowl this winter.

Among the notable individual performance in Week 16:

? Reggie Bush went over 1,000 yards rushing for the first time in his career, gaining 113 in Miami's loss to New England.

? The Rams' Steven Jackson ran for 103 yards in a 27-0 loss to Pittsburgh to go over 1,000 on the season for the seventh straight year.

? Seattle's Marshawn Lynch scored the first TD rushing against San Francisco all season, a 4-yarder. It was the 11th straight game in which he had a touchdown.

? 49ers kicker David Akers set an NFL record with 42 field goals for the season, including four in the 19-17 win at Seattle.

? Carolina's Cam Newton broke Peyton Manning's NFL rookie record for yards passing in a season with 3,893 as the Panthers routed Tampa Bay 48-16.

? Denver's Willis McGahee joined Ricky Watters as the only players to reach 1,000 yards rushing with three teams. He previously did it with Buffalo and Baltimore.

Chicago Pride Parade Compromise Reached

Posted by: Bridgette P. LaVictoire on December 22, 2011.

While Cardinal Frances George has been out there calling gays the new KKK, a compromise was reached between the organizers of the Gay Pride Parade in Chicago and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church. The procession route will still go in front of the parish, but the parade will start later.

The parade had been set to start at 10am in order to address concerns about drunken and unruly crowds along the route, and concerns about safety for adjacent neighborhoods with regards to emergency vehicles. These changes were made a few months ago, and three weeks ago, the pastor at Mount Carmel objected because the parade would force the church to close on that Sunday morning because of inaccessibility. Hee wanted his parishioners to contact Mayor Rahm Emanuel to try and get the time or route changed.

Alderman Thomas Tunney and Richard Pfeiffer announced that the parade would now start at noon in this statement:

?We met with representatives from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church last week to hear the parish?s concerns about the proposed changes to the 2012 Gay Pride Parade. We discussed moving the start time back to 12:00 Noon to help accommodate Sunday services along the parade route. After consulting with the various City departments, we believe this is an agreeable compromise to help keep the parade safe and manageable while respecting the diversity of our neighborhood.?

Cardinal George continues to maintain his bigotry and will not back down from his statement despite this development. Let?s face it, you can?t Torquamada anything?as Mel Brooks once quipped.

Villarreal, an 18-year-old native of Inglewood, Calif., scored 20 goals in 31 games for the Galaxy Academy and led the club to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-18 championship in July.

?It?s been my dream ever since I was little to be a professional soccer player, so to be able to do that and stay close to home so that I can play in front of my family and friends is a dream come true,? Villarreal said in a statement. ?Growing up here in the area I?ve always watched the Galaxy and been a fan of the team so this will be a great experience for me.?

CAW Urges Harper to Review Caterpillar Purchase of London Locomotive Plant

December 21, 2011, 12:15 PM EST

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

CAW President Ken Lewenza is calling on the federal government to immediately conduct a full review of U.S. based Caterpillar's purchase of Canada's only locomotive manufacturing facility - Electro-Motive - in London, Ontario.

In a December 21 letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Lewenza said the future of the plant and the 800 good jobs it provides is in peril. "Government inaction and ineffective foreign investment rules could result in the end of more than sixty years of high value-added manufacturing and the loss of 800 good jobs..," Lewenza states.

CAW Local 27 represents production workers at Electro Motive in London.

Under the Investment Canada Act, notification of the acquisition of Electro-Motive was filed with the Minister of Industry, which was reviewed and approved. A receipt was issued in September 2010 declaring the investment required no further review.

Caterpillar bought the London plant in June 2010, but within less than a year of the purchase three other locations in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil are slated to build EMD locomotives. The company is now demanding massive wage cuts from the London workers and the elimination of the pension. Lewenza said it increasingly looks like the company is trying to force workers out on the street, "providing convenient cover for any plans to move production out of Canada."?

"There is broad agreement among industry experts that Caterpillar's long-term interest in Electro-Motive centers on plans to acquire long-sought after technology and to bring production to the U.S. to gain access to State government incentives."

Lewenza stressed that Canada doesn't need another job-destroying failed foreign investment.

"Will you instruct the Minister of Industry to use his powers under the Act to issue a demand and retroactively order a full review of this acquisition?" Lewenza asked Harper.? "Will you instruct your Minister to issue a demand to Caterpillar requiring them to declare their intentions for the London operations? Will your Minister negotiate investment and employment undertakings with Caterpillar to safeguard the future of these operations?"

China Just Cut Railway Construction Plans Again As Debt Continues To Pile Up

china trainBEIJING (AP) ? China's government announced another cut in railway construction spending Friday amid concern about the debts of the world's biggest rail network and the safety of its showcase bullet trains.

Beijing will spend about 400 billion yuan ($65 billion) next year on railway construction, Railways Minister Sheng Guangzu said at an industry conference, the state Xinhua News Agency reported. That is down from what Xinhua said is expected spending of 469 billion yuan ($75 billion) this year and a sharp drop from 2010's 700 billion yuan ($112 billion).

Beijing is rapidly expanding China's 56,000-mile (91,000-kilometer) rail network, which is overloaded with passengers and cargo. But it has scaled back plans amid concern about whether Sheng's ministry can repay its mounting debts.

Critics complain authorities have spent too much on high-speed lines, a prestige project for the ruling Communist Party, while failing to invest enough in expanding cheaper, slower routes to serve China's poor majority.

A failure to expand rail capacity could choke economic growth because exporters away from China's coast rely on rail to get goods to ports.

The Xinhua report Friday gave no details of spending plans or where the government intends to expand service.

The rail ministry's mounting debts have prompted concern about whether it will have to be bailed out by Chinese taxpayers. Private sector analysts say revenues from ticket sales and freight charges probably are insufficient to pay its publicly reported 2 trillion yuan ($300 billion) in debt.

Beijing reined in the rapid expansion of its bullet train network after a July 23 crash that killed 40 people triggered a public outcry about a system that critics say is dangerous and too costly for a poor country. The speed of the fastest lines also was reduced.

Xinhua described Friday's announcement as the first time the communist government has announced a "clear goal for future railway development." It said construction "has been almost halted" since the bullet train crash.

Sheng, the railway minister, announced a moratorium in August on new rail projects while the government carried out a nationwide safety inspection.

Government plans announced earlier call for expanding the rail network to 75,000 miles (120,000 kilometers) by 2020.

In a report this week, the World Bank called China's system "by far the most densely trafficked railway network in the world." It recommended that Beijing overhaul its system of state-set prices and allow rail managers more flexibility in setting ticket and cargo prices to make trains more efficient and affordable.

Dauphin County commissioners approve nearly $800000 in gaming ...

A fire company, a small-town theater, a borough park and an historic cemetery will benefit from nearly $800,000 in gaming grants approved today by Dauphin County commissioners.

The largest grant, for $750,000, will cover the county redevelopment authority's share of a roughly $2 million project to renovate and reopen Millersburg's venerable Colonnade Theater.

Citizens Fire Company of Penbrook is to receive $33,000 for equipment purchases and Elizabethville will receive an $11,000 share for upgrades at the borough park.

Commissioners approved a $950 grant to help the Friends of Midland continue restoration of the historic Midland Cemetery at Steelton. Thousands of blacks are buried there, many in unmarked graves. The internees include Civil War veterans and a star baseball player in the Negro Leagues.

Money for the grants comes from the county's 2 percent cut of slot-machine revenue at Hollywood Casino in East Hanover Township.

Prince Harry Helps Friend After London Mugging

LONDON -- Royal officials say Prince Harry showed up at a London police station to help a friend who had been mugged.

Harry's Clarence House office says the 27-year-old prince went to support a friend who was reporting a robbery.

British media say Thomas van Straubenzee was robbed in a south London street while on the phone with Harry, who raced across the city to help. When he could not find Van Straubenzee, Harry went to the local police station, where he gave a witness statement.

Police said a mobile phone was recovered after the Nov. 30 robbery. A suspect has been arrested and bailed.

Harry, an army helicopter pilot, recently returned from a two-month training exercise in the United States.

Iraq ledger: War by the numbers (The Christian Science Monitor)

Reckoning the costs of war in Iraq will take years, especially the impact on US prestige and power in the world. Historians, political scientists, and economists will write doctoral dissertations on the subject, and some will devote careers to calculating and analyzing the data and each others? conclusions ? as continues to be the case with the Vietnam War.

Analysts Matthew Duss and Peter Juul of the Center for American Progress have taken a first cut at calculating the costs of the American war in Iraq.

The center is a progressive, nonprofit think tank and advocacy organization in Washington, founded in 2003 by former Clinton administration chief of staff John Podesta.

The organization's inclinations are clearly left-of-center, but the figures in its ?Iraq War Ledger? are taken from nonpartisan sources, including the Congressional Research Service, icasualties.org, the Defense Department, the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, the Centers for Disease Control, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

IN PICTURES: Leaving Iraq

Here are some of the main points:

Human Costs

Coalition deaths totaled 4,803, of which 4,484 (93 percent) were American. The number of Americans wounded was 32,200. At least 463 non-Iraqi contractors were killed.

Iraqi civilian deaths are estimated to total between 103,674 and 113,265.

The UNHCR says the war resulted in 1.24 million internally displaced persons and more than 1.6 million refugees.

Financial costs

The Congressional Research Service puts the dollar cost of Operation Iraqi Freedom at $806 billion.

In their book ?The Three Trillion Dollar War,? Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes estimate the projected total cost of veterans? health care and disability payments to be between $422 billion and $717 billion.

Veterans

More than 2 million US service members have served in Iraq or Afghanistan (many in both wars).

The total number of Iraq/Afghanistan veterans eligible for Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care is 1,250,663, half of whom (625,384) have used VA health care since 2002.

The number of Iraq/Afghanistan veterans diagnosed with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is at least 168,854 ? more than a quarter of those who have used VA health care.

The suicide rate for Iraq/Afghanistan veterans using VA health care in FY 2008 was 38 suicides per 100,000 veterans ? more than three times the national suicide rate for the previous year.

Iraq reconstruction

Total funding: $182.27 billion.

Iraqi government funds (including Coalition Provisional Authority funding): $107.41 billion.

International funds: $13.03 billion.

US funds (2003-2011): $61.83 billion. As a basis for comparison, the US after World War II spent $34.3 billion in Germany and $17.6 billion in Japan on post-war reconstruction. (All figures in 2011 dollars.)

The cost of war is more than numbers, of course. Losing a family member or a lifetime of disability are incalculable.

?The end of former Iraq President Saddam Hussein?s brutal regime represents a considerable global good, and a nascent democratic Iraqi republic partnered with the United States could potentially yield benefits in the future,? Duss and Juul of the Center for American Progress write. ?But when weighing those possible benefits against the costs of the Iraq intervention, there is simply no conceivable calculus by which Operation Iraqi Freedom can be judged to have been a successful or worthwhile policy.?

That?s a political and historical judgment that no doubt will be debated for years.

(AP) ? Zynga is poised to harvest some cold hard cash in its initial public offering. Who knew that selling virtual cows and digital corn on Facebook would create a $7 billion company?

The online game developer best known for "FarmVille" priced its initial public offering late Thursday at $10 per share.

That's at the top of its expected range of $8.50 to $10, a sign that investors are eager to get a piece of the latest in a series of high-profile tech IPOs this year. Zynga is selling 100 million shares and giving its underwriters the right to buy another 15 million shares. The company stands to raise slightly more than $1 billion from the offering, before subtracting for expenses.

Thursday's pricing gives San Francisco-based Zynga a market value of about $7 billion.

Zynga will begin trading Friday on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol "ZNGA." That's when "Main Street" investors will get a chance to buy the stock. The offering rounds out a busy week for IPOs, the likes of which the market hasn't seen since before the 2008 financial meltdown.

Founded in 2007 and named after CEO Mark Pincus' dog, Zynga Inc. follows online deals site Groupon Inc. and professional network LinkedIn Corp. in going public. A bevy of smaller Internet startups, such as reviews site Angie's List Inc. and Pandora Media Inc., have also taken the plunge. They're the soup, salad and appetizer to the main course: Facebook's public debut, expected sometime after April. The social network could rake in as much as $10 billion.

Pincus and Zynga's 2,300 employees have built a business charging small amounts of money ? a few cents, sometimes a couple of dollars ? for virtual items in online games. The games themselves free to play. These items range from crops in "Farmville" to buildings in "CityVille," its most popular Facebook game. This so-called "free-to-play" business model assumes that most people won't want to pay anything to build virtual castles in "CastleVille" or take down rival mob bosses in "Mafia Wars."

But with a large enough player base and a few loyal spenders, Zynga was able to earn a net income of $90.6 million in 2010. Though not unheard of, it's unusual for a tech startup to turn a profit before going public.

Zynga has been criticized for being too dependent on Facebook and its 800 million users. Facebook takes 30 percent cut from what people spend on outside applications through its site. In the July-September period, 93 percent of Zynga's revenue was generated through the world's largest online social network.

That said, there's no denying that Facebook's vast user base and widespread popularity are directly responsible for Zynga's meteoric rise. As of Thursday, Zynga's games had more than 223 million monthly users on Facebook. If those gamers could form their own nation, its population would be roughly on par with Indonesia and Brazil.

Zynga's growth has also been helped by the simple fact that its games are addictive. Just last week, actor Alec Baldwin got booted off a plane because he wouldn't stop playing "Words With Friends," Zynga's Scrabble-inspired mobile phone game. Zynga is focusing on mobile gaming as a way to expand beyond Facebook.

Baldwin's flight fiasco offers proof that mobile games present the biggest growth opportunity for Zynga, according to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter. International expansion and getting people who already play Zynga games to spend money are other ways the company can grow.

Zynga is not without rivals. Its main competitor on Facebook is Electronic Arts Inc., the more old-school video game publisher best known for console games such as "Madden" and "The Sims." Recently, EA has been focusing on its mobile and online business. Its Facebook version of "The Sims" has created a healthy rivalry with Zynga.

Though not a direct competitor, another similar company is Japan's Nexon Co., which went public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange this week, raising $1.2 billion. Originally from South Korea, Nexon pioneered the free-to-play revenue model that has led to Zynga's success. But where Zynga caters to the Facebooked masses, Nexon's focus is on more complicated games that can take hours, not minutes to crack. Valued at $7.2 billion after Wedneday's IPO, Nexon has about 77 million monthly active users.

Owen Mahoney, chief financial officer of Nexon and a former EA executive, believes several trends are contributing to the popularity of gaming companies like Nexon and Zynga. Namely, higher broadband Internet speeds are making it easier to download games; consumers are looking to try before they buy; and they are spending money in smaller amounts per purchase ? not unlike when music fans began buying individual digital songs, as opposed to entire albums.

"The same forces that affected the entertainment business are affecting the video game business," Mahoney said.

Not everyone is big on Zynga, though. "FarmVille" and its ilk annoy some Facebook users who get tired of their crop-harvesting friends asking for help with their virtual farms.

There are naysayers on Wall Street too. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia took the unusual step of putting an "Underperform" rating on Zynga this week, days before the company was scheduled to go public. The analyst set a price target of $7 for Zynga's yet-to-be traded stock, below even the low end of its expected IPO pricing range, citing concerns about the company's growth rate. Bhatia said he wanted to provide an "independent view" of Zynga at a time when its bankers and the company will be selling the deal to clients.

"It's not to say the stock can't do well initially," he said.

Wedbush's Pachter, meanwhile, said it's "really premature" to call the death of a four-year-old industry.

"No one has enough data to say growth is stalled," he said.
