'High level' of bad teeth among athletes at London 2012

Despite the beaming smiles of gold medal winners at London 2012, a study at last year's Games has found "high levels" of bad teeth among competing athletes.

Using data from 278 athletes from 25 sports, researchers found 55% had tooth decay or cavities, 45% had dental erosion and 76% had gingivitis. More than 40% were "bothered" by their oral health.

The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, concluded: "The oral health of athletes attending the dental clinic of the London 2012 Games was poor with a resulting substantial negative impact on well-being, training and performance."

(AP) ? Chancellor Angela Merkel was strongly favored to win a third term at the helm of Europe's biggest economy as Germans voted in a national election Sunday, but the popular conservative's hopes of governing with center-right allies for another four years were in the balance.

Nearly 62 million people were eligible to elect the lower house of Parliament, which in turn chooses the chancellor.

Merkel's Christian Democratic Union and its Bavaria-only sister, the Christian Social Union, appeared likely to emerge as the strongest force and fend off a challenge from center-left rival Peer Steinbrueck. But beyond that, things may get more complicated.

No single party has won a majority in Germany in more than 50 years. Merkel would like to continue governing with her partner of choice, the pro-business Free Democratic Party ? but polls have shown support for the smaller party fading from nearly 15 percent in the 2009 election to around the 5 percent needed to keep any seats in Parliament.

Merkel pleaded Saturday for "a strong mandate so that I can serve Germany for another four years, make policies for ... a strong Germany, for a country that is respected in Europe, that works for Europe; a country that stands up for its interests in the world but is a friend of many nations."

Her party has rebuffed calls from leading Free Democrats for Merkel supporters to back them, saying it has no votes to spare. Polls show the coalition in a dead heat with a combination of Steinbrueck's Social Democrats, their Green allies and the hard-line Left Party ? but the two center-left parties have ruled out an alliance with the latter.

If her current coalition falls short of a parliamentary majority, the likeliest outcome is a switch to a Merkel-led "grand coalition" of her conservatives with the Social Democrats, the same combination of traditional rivals that ran Germany from 2005-2009 in Merkel's first term.

That's unlikely to produce a radical change in policies. However, it could signal subtle shifts, perhaps a greater emphasis on bolstering economic growth over the austerity that Germany has insisted on in exchange for bailing out economically weak European countries such as Greece.

Final results are due within hours of polls closing at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT). But with margins so close, the country could still face weeks of horse-trading before a clear picture of the new government emerges.

Merkel calls her current coalition "the most successful government since reunification" 23 years ago. She points to the robust economy and unemployment which, at 6.8 percent, is very low for Germany and far below that of many other European countries.

Polls give Merkel popularity ratings of about 70 percent. The sky-high popularity doesn't extend to her coalition, which has bickered frequently over issues ranging from tax cuts to privacy laws. The Free Democrats have taken much of the blame.

"They said it was a marriage of love ? that was how they ran in 2009 ? and then the divorce lawyer spent the whole time running along the sidelines," Steinbrueck said at a rally in Frankfurt on Saturday.

Steinbrueck's platform stresses the importance of narrowing the gap between rich and poor. He wants to introduce a national minimum wage and raise income tax for top earners. Merkel and the Free Democrats contend that both measures could backfire and hurt the economy.

A new party, Alternative for Germany, which calls for an "orderly breakup" of the euro currency zone and appeals to socially conservative voters, could sap votes from the governing parties and complicate Sunday's outcome. Polls suggest that it could enter Parliament ? but Merkel and others are ruling out working with it.

"Stabilizing the euro is not just a good thing for Europe, it is in the elementary interests of Germany," Merkel said Saturday. "It secures jobs and it secures our prosperity."

She said that her course of helping Europe's strugglers in exchange for budget discipline and reforms "must be continued."

A euro breakup "would set European unification back 20 to 30 years" and ruin German businesses, said Steinbrueck, whose party backed Merkel's eurozone policies in Parliament but criticized her for over-emphasizing austerity.

Germany's government, he said, has "a clear European responsibility to hold this continent together."

An opinion poll published Sunday by the weekly Bild am Sonntag put support for Merkel's conservatives at 39 percent. Her allies the Free Democrats were at 6 percent.

Steinbrueck's Social Democrats would receive 26 percent of the vote, according to the poll. The Greens and the Left Party each came in at 9 percent.

The survey of 2,047 voters was conducted by the Emnid research institute from Sept. 15-20.

Five Annoying Life Problems You Can Solve For Five Bucks With ...

Life is filled with tasks we don?t want to do or don?t have the skillset to accomplish. Maybe you need to craft a good resume and business card; maybe you just want advice on learning to code. To solve many of these problems, all you need is five dollars.

Images remixed from originals by Krishnadas (Shutterstock), dwphotos (Shutterstock) and Lightboxx (Shutterstock)

While we like to encourage researching and doing things yourself, you can?t do everything. When you need to delegate, you should. That?s where a service called Fiverr comes in.

We discovered Fiverr a while back, but never really took a close look at what you can do with it. The basic concept is easy to understand: Fiverr provides a marketplace where anyone can provide services or products for five dollars each. (That?s in US dollars, so for Aussies it costs just slightly over $5 right now, but the difference isn?t big enough to stress over.)

I started using Fiverr for a few birthday gifts and odd jobs and found it was a cost effective way to delegate when I needed it, without making any monthly commitments or paying too much. While some jobs cost a little more than $5 if you upgrade them, you can solve all sorts of annoying problems ? from learning a new skill to getting a job ? with help from the Fiverr community. In this post, we?ll look at how you can use Fiverr to solve five common problems that you may not have the skills or time to handle yourself. We?ll also help you discover how you can solve other, specific issues not explicitly discussed here.

Get A Job

You always want to put your best foot forward when applying for jobs. That starts with a quality resume and a well-written cover letter. In some cases, you may want an attractive business card and personal landing page. Fiverr can solve those problems each.

When putting your resume together, you want a well-organised, proofread document with a simple and functional design. While you can probably handle one or two of those jobs yourself, if you need a second eye, some suggestions, or a visual touch up you can find all of those services on Fiverr, with a turnaround of just a couple of days. Simply search Fiverr for resume or cover letter to see all of your options, or take a look at these:

While you won?t need everything on that list, you can pick an area where you feel you come up a little short and get some help.

If you need to network and want a business card, Fiverr has some very unique options. (Check prices here, though, as postage down under might increase costs in cases where you?re sent an actual card, not merely a file you can supply to a printer.)

Learn To Code (and Other New Skills)

We?ve taught you the basics of coding in both JavaScript and HTML/CSS, but we often get asked what to do next. Although we?ve provided a list of further resources, a lot of people struggle to move forward without someone pointing them in the right direction and helping them out. Learning from a web site gets tough sometimes because you can?t easily ask questions. If you fall into this category, Fiverr can help you out. You just need to choose a programming language:

There are plenty of free resources around the net, such as Stack Overflow, to get help with your code. In general you should employ these resources first before forking over $5 on a problem you can solve for free. That said, online forums tend to get you help from experienced programmers who will tell you how to fix the problem in a way that you may not yet understand. Furthermore, they may not have the time or the desire to actually fix a problem for you. When you find yourself in a jam a free resource can?t fix, or you just need someone to help you through the learning process, you can turn to Fiverr and get what you need on a budget.

You can learn to do more than just code. Many people teach musical instruments over Skype, including piano, guitar, flute, clarinet and saxophone (among others). You can learn languages such as Italian, Spanish, Japanese, French and German. You can even train your dog. While Skype (or other video conferencing software) won?t replace the benefits of real world interaction, you?ll pay a lot less this way. If you have basic skills and have the willingness to put in the time to learn, you can get some focused, personal help on the cheap.

Get Help With Your Office Or School Work

Sometimes work or school gets overwhelming and you need assistance. A little help can make your work a lot better and teach you how to improve in the future.

Just as you can get proofreading help with a resume or cover letter, you can utilise the same services with business documents. Most of the time, however, you don?t have time to wait for someone to take a day or two to proofread or find that task worthwhile. If you need that service for university, however, you can find a good editor to make sure you turn in a quality paper when it really matters.

Workers will benefit more from a virtual assistant. Using Fiverr, you can hire someone as a virtual assistant for the amount of time you need and only when you need it. This way you can request help when you feel overwhelmed and not have to pay for the times you don?t. If you need help with a specific task, like a presentation, you can find that, too.

Find A Personalised Birthday Gift That Doesn?t Suck

You have to buy a lot of birthday gifts during your lifetime, and finding unique ones gets pretty tough after so many years. Fiverr has a lot of good and cheap options, from fairly standard to super-weird.

If you don?t want an actual, physical product, you can get a strange birthday message from all sorts of people recorded as a video. These come in the form of a birthday rap, children singing, ukulele music, a cartoon, Sri Lankan jungle dance, puppets, a mankini song and dance, or, of course, a ventriloquist clown. If you can think of a way to deliver a video birthday message, someone probably does it.

When you want something outside of the video message category, you can get things like a personalised Android birthday app, pixel art of the birthday boy or girl, a caricature, a customised bracelet, a small felt stuffed animal, a drawing as a Simpsons cartoon, a custom-crocheted object, or even a hat.

If you want anything made for you that doesn?t cost too much in materials or time, you can search for it on Fiverr and often find someone who will make it. If you can?t, you can seek out someone similar and see if they can handle what you?re looking for. While job descriptions might look rigid on the site, if you need alterations you can sometimes get them for free or for an extra fee. You just have to ask. Also, because new people join and leave the site on a regular basis, check back if you can?t find what you want. You?ll probably encounter it eventually, so it helps to plan ahead.

Build A Web Site

Learning to code can help you build a web site, but sometimes you need explicit help or assistance to get a site off the ground the first time. Perhaps you don?t want to do any of the work. Either way, you can find people on Fiverr to help you out.

Full sites cost a lot of money, so to get one won?t come easy. You have to make a few sacrifices, help out, or pay a bit more to get the job done. You can hire someone to help or fix specific issues the cheap, but that only works if you have the requisite coding skills and need help in the planning phase. If you just need coding help, you can use any of the resources mentioned in the previous problem. If you choose to deploy WordPress site, you can find someone to customise it. Getting a full site, however, will often require piecing together smaller jobs and that may or may not work for you. If that?s the case, and you don?t have the budget for a handful of $5 jobs, just keep an eye on Fiverr. If you can?t find what you want one day, it may well show up on another.

Overall, you?ll have the most trouble finding the right person or people to create an entire web site for you from scratch. That said, they do exist and you just have to keep an eye out for the right opportunity.

We?ve looked at how you can solve five annoying problems, but if you?ve got another not listed here you can still seek out help on Fiverr. Just search for what you?re looking for and follow these steps to help ensure a good experience:

  • Look for listings with high ratings and the turnaround time you need

  • Contact the person providing the service, explain what you want specifically, and make sure they can do the job for you.

  • If you have a specific deadline in mind, mention it so you can find out if they can handle your request by the time you need it.

  • If you have samples similar to the work you want done, send them along so you set realistic expectations.

If you keep those things in mind, you?ll get work better suited to what you want. Like with any service, always err on the side of more communication. You?ll rarely get what you want if you don?t convey your needs, but a few simple pointers can make the work great.

Before you go off into the world of $5 jobs, you should remember that you can get a lot of stuff for free or handle it yourself. You should use Fiverr to give you freedom when your time comes at a greater cost than a small amount of your money. You should delegate when you need it, but also do things yourself the hard way on a regular basis. Convenience is good, but balance is better. Don?t forget to keep both in your life.

California earthquake warning system will cost $80 million

Gov. Jerry Brown said California has solved a lot of problems, like balancing the state budget, while speaking before a gathering of business leaders at the California Chamber of Commerce's 88th Annual Sacramento Host Breakfast in Sacramento, Calif., Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

Rich Pedroncelli/AP

The California legislature sent a bill to the desk of Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday that would require the state to build an earthquake early warning system.?

When it comes to preparing for a major earthquake, every second is precious.

The California legislature has passed a bill Thursday evening that would require the state to develop an $80 million earthquake early warning system that could give officials as much as 60 seconds to alert residents before a major temblor strikes.

?We live in earthquake country. When it comes to earthquakes in California, it is not a matter of if, but when,? State Sen. Alex Padilla, the bill?s lead sponsor, said in a statement. ?A fully developed earthquake early warning system will provide Californians critical seconds to take cover, assist loved ones, or pull over safely to the side of the road. It could allow time to stop a train and power down critical infrastructure. Most importantly, it will save lives.?

RELATED: CALIFORNIA MULLS $80 MILLION EARTHQUAKE WARNING SYSTEM

The California Integrated Seismic Network, a consortium of researchers from CalTech, the University of California at Berkeley and the United States Geological Survey, has been testing out the prototype for the new warning system since the year 2000.

Shown to be effective in numerous trial runs, the system works by using sensors to detect small P waves, the first sign that an earthquake is about to occur. By analyzing the P waves, scientists can quickly calculate how large the much more damaging S waves will be and alert officials what is on the way.

Those crucial seconds can make a big difference.

RELATED: NEW EARTHQUAKE WARNING SYSTEM WORKS IN CALIFORNIA

?If BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) were knocked out, that would be catastrophic to the Bay Area economy,? David Oppenheimer, project chief for CISN?s Northern California division, told the Daily News. ?But if you have enough warning so that you can stop or slow down trains so that they don?t derail, you save lots of money.?

It?s unclear whether Gov. Jerry Brown will sign the measure, but Padilla is hopeful.

?We need to develop this system without delay. California is going to have an earthquake early warning system, the question is whether we have one before or after the next big quake,? Padilla said.

Experts say there is a 94% chance that an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the richter scale will hit California in the next 30 years.

Google Street View Driver Rams 2 Buses, 1 Truck in Failed Hit-and-Run

It's not a good year to be a Google Street View driver?or rather, in this case, to be anywhere in the vicinity of one. In Bogor, Indonesia, one ill-fated Google Street View car got itself into a bit of trouble when the driver's failed attempt at a hit-and-run involved him ramming into two large public busses and a truck. Because third crash is a charm.

Good Reads: From student debt, to Bloomberg?s last stand, to the Russian justice system

This week's round-up of Good Reads includes predatory college lending, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's last term, an expat's return to the United States, the tangle of Russia's justice system, and why Egypt is no longer a regional leader.

By Marshall Ingwerson,?Managing editor / August 30, 2013

The freshman class at Vanderbilt University spells out their graduation year.

Mark Humphrey/AP

Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone magazine has a penchant for over-the-top, flame-throwing invective. So who better to stir up some outrage over America?s escalating student-debt burden? You don?t read Mr. Taibbi to understand. You read Taibbi to get motivated to understand.

Recent posts

The average student loan is now $28,000. Some loans are close to mortgage-level amounts, saddling students with heavy payments for decades. Taibbi fingers two villains. First, tuition levels at colleges and universities continue to run laps around inflation in the rest of the economy. Very little of the increased cost is for education per se. Instead, much of it is ?gilding,? building more attractive health clubs and dorms and bringing on celebrity professors to compete for students.

But why not compete by cutting prices? Because the growth of student loans has brought vast new sums of money into the system ? supplied by young people from the least-affluent families among the college bound. The greater villain is the highly profitable government-run lending program itself. Taibbi calls it ?a government-sponsored predatory-lending program that makes even the most ruthless private credit-card company seem like a ?Save the Panda? charity.?

Bloomberg's last stand

As New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg nears the end of his three terms in office, The New Yorker?s Ken Auletta assesses a career that defies categorization. With a net worth estimated at $27 billion, Mr. Bloomberg never needed to raise money to campaign, and he prides himself on being able to say no to special interests. On his watch, crime has fallen dramatically and post-recession employment has grown much faster than the national average. His ?stop and frisk? policy has set liberal teeth on edge. His ban on selling large sugary drinks has made conservative eyes roll. His effort to promote gun control nationally has put conservatives on the warpath. ?Now he is clearly vexed by the challenges of envisaging his own future and a City Hall without him,? writes Mr. Auletta.

A return to ?awesome? America

After 18 years in London as a correspondent for The New York Times, Sarah Lyall has returned to the United States and offers readers some compare-and-contrast observations. The British have become more American over the years, she notes, but retain their traditional reserve. ?Sometimes in London I felt stupidly enthusiastic, like a Labrador puppy let loose in an antique store, or overly loud and gauche, like a guest who shows up at a memorial service wearing a Hawaiian shirt and traumatizes the mourners with intrusive personal questions.?

Burning Man Partied at the Altar of a Golden Facebook Like

If you needed further that proof that Burning Man is now just SXSW: Desert Storm, how about the Playa's own paean to Facebook?

Technically, the installation didn't violate Burning Man's "Decommodification" principle since the sculpture, by a Dutch artist named Dadara who raised funds on Indiegogo, was designed to "question how social media affects our human bonds."

But between the bikini-clad tech deals and outsourcing "DIY" art projects to TaskRabbits, the "Like4Real" statue became turned into just another social media humble-brag. Suddenly, this year's "Cargo Cult" theme makes sense.
