There are 34,000 Christmas lights illuminating Dominic Marasco's home on 22 Mile Road. Lights adorn the roof of the house, his garage, shrubs and trees, his porch, and pretty much anything else that stands still.?
The words "God Said Let There Be Lights" and "Happy Birthday Jesus" blink off and on on his roof, while on the garage, a 6-foot peace sign and globe help spell out "Peace On Earth."
He has so many outdoor lights that he had an electrician install extra outlets to accomodate the surge of power needed to illuminate his home. And his display keeps growing.?
"Every year, it gets bigger and bigger," he said. "A few years ago, I started out with 28,000 and I think last year I had 32,000."?
On Nov. 1, Marasco ? with help from his children, Ty, 13, and Torianna, 11 ? started putting up the lights. Marasco couldn't say for sure how long it takes to install the display, but notes that it is a lot of work and is rather time-consuming. ?
His lights are a mix of color and type, from the traditional holiday lights to the newer, energy-saving LEDs. Since family give him lights as both birthday and Christmas gifts, he couldn't say for sure how much it costs to buy the lights, but he does take advantage of after-Christmas sales. His electric bill, however, does climb significantly during the holidays, but he hopes the newer lights will keep the high cost in check.?
What do his neighbors think of this electric display? Marasco said everybody enjoys the lights and many have commented on how good his house looks every year (he's been putting up the display for the past 15 years). Drivers on 22 Mile Road stop often, he said, adding that's he's noticed camera flashes coming from the front yard at night.
"I know they are out there taking pictures, and that's OK. I am glad people appreciate it," he said. "I even had someone offer to give me a donation for my electric bill, but I said no thanks."?
Curious about the inside of the Marasco home? Well, that's impressive, as well. There's decorations throughout the house and Marasco's wife, Pam, is responsible for the sizeable Christmas village display.?
Haven't seen the home yet? It's located on 22 Mile Road, just east of Romeo Plank Road. The lights should be on nightly 6-11 p.m. through Jan. 5.?
