Volunteers help Weedsport woman battling breast cancer

WEEDSPORT | When it comes to helping Carol Schoonmaker, the Weedsport woman's loved ones don't mind braving a little rain ? or even a torrential downpour.

On Saturday, Schoonmaker's family and friends put on raincoats and ponchos and spent the afternoon running a benefit in Bomber's Chicken Shack's parking lot, determined to raise money to help Schoonmaker fight breast cancer.

The scent of marinated barbeque chicken wafted down South Seneca Street in Weedsport, drawing hungry people out of their cars and into the rain to purchase a freshly cooked chicken dinner.

Through every donation made and each dinner purchased, Debbie Clements said she and her fellow volunteers hoped to help offset the cost of Schoonmaker's expensive medical bills.

"She's a good friend of mine," Clements said. "She could use the donations."

Clements said her friend and co-worker was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly a year ago, just in time for Christmas. She said Schoonmaker, who recently underwent surgery, was recovering and could not attend the rainy benefit.

Despite the inclement weather, Clements said the benefit was well attended. By 1:30 p.m., the volunteers were out of beans and coleslaw, amazed to note that they were running low on chicken.

Sam Schoonmaker, Carol Schoonmaker's brother, said many community members not present at the Saturday benefit had also shown tremendous support for his sister. He said Rizzo Construction Company Inc., of Auburn, offered to donate a new sewage system for his sister, while Dana Bottindari Construction LLC, also of Auburn, planned to install a new roof on her home.

"It's been great," Schoonmaker said. "Everyone's been great."

Opening an umbrella, Clements agreed.

"It's an awesome turn out," she said. "People have been generous."
