Colorado Mesa Names New Head Softball Coach

GRAND JUNCTION, colo.-Colorado Mesa University Athletic Director Butch Miller announced Candace Abrams as the next head softball coach to guide the CMU program. Abrams spent the past two years at her alma mater, University of Arizona, where she served as an assistant coach under the legendary Mike Candrea.

"CMU is thrilled to have Candace on board and we look forward to welcoming her as a member of our coaching staff. She is eager and ready to begin her tenure as head coach," said Miller. "Candace's experience, success and knowledge as a player and coach at a Division I institution as well as her coaching background at every level is impressive. I am confident that Maverick softball will continue to rank as one of the top teams in the upper echelon of Division II softball,"? added Miller.

Abrams spent the past two years at University of Arizona working primarily with outfielders as well as scouting and observing opponent???s tendencies in preparation for game day strategies. This past season the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Division I Super Regional title game before bowing out to eventual national runner-up, Oklahoma.

Prior to her arrival at University of Arizona she spent two years as assistant coach at NCAA Division II Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, while pursuing her master???s degree. During her tenure at Barry University she designed and implemented drills for outfielders, catchers and hitters. She assisted in recruiting student-athletes, fundraising and day-to-day operations.

During the summer of 2009 and 2010 she was Co-Head Coach for the 18-and-under Players Edge Elite travel team in Bakersfield, Calif. She organized drills, assisted in game decisions and participated in all aspects of training, coaching and preparing young adult athletes for competition.

Coach Abrams led the Catalina Foothills High School team in Tucson for two years in 2007 and 2008. She oversaw all aspects of the softball program, organizing practices for team and individual skill improvement, while creating a balance between academic and softball performance.

Abrams began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Pima Community College in Tucson from 2005-2007. The Aztecs won the NJCAA Division I Championship in 2006 and the coaching staff was named Coaching Staff of the Year. Her duties included designing and implementing drills for outfielders and hitters. She developed specific weight training and conditioning programs and aided in the development of practices and games.

A graduate of University of Arizona she played four years under Coach Candrea and was a member of the 2001 NCAA Division I National Championship softball team. A four-year letterwinner, the versatile Abrams played catcher and outfield during her career. An Academic All-American Honorable Mention, she graduated with a bachelor???s degree in physical education and State of Arizona Teaching Certification in 2004.
